Last Passage | 2 comments Hello All, and Thanks to Rick for the invite to join the group.

My name's Joanne and I am a publisher at a small indie press here in the UK...Last Passage (LP). LP is a member of the IPG and has three authors on its books now, although only 1 has made it to print so far.

LP publish Thrillers, Scientific Fiction, Religious Fiction and Horror...and we generally publish digitally first, followed by print if the digital edition is successful (our first release Codex by Adrian Dawson was the #1 bestselling full length thriller on the UK iBookstore of 2010).

I read lots (for work) less so for personal pleasure now, but I was usually only 5 inches (from my nose) away from a good book throughout my childhood. I watch loads of films, but am not so interested in the TV programmes...especially now that most UK programming is reality based shows.

I've lived all over the world in a previous life (job) and am currently based in Nottingham - the home of Robin Hood!!

I look forward to discussing everything and anything and I promise - no hard sells!! If you ask me I'll answer, but don't believe in pushing LP novels down people's throats...you will either like the novels that LP publish, or you won't. The choice as they say is yours!

Hi Joanne, great to have you on board. I am in the U.S. and many times have been asked by friends who live in the U.K. for copies of my books. I have only had Amazon as a resource which is supposed to be international. I am not sure how it works. Is it just better to have a publisher in the U.K.? Many people do go to the Amazon site as it is quite well known, but with over 300,000 books published a year (I believe that is just a U.S. statistic), one is always looking for ways to become better exposed. Without you giving away your trade secrets, what are good ways that a new writer can and should promote? Once you have answered that, I will tell you what I have done so far. Best, Jon

Maple (discotheque_juliet) | 1 comments Hi all. I'm Shanna. I'm not really good with the whole group thing, but I'll give it a try. I'm a pretty avid reader and I'll give any genre a try without being judgemental of it. I try to be a pretty open, honest person, but we all have out quirks I suppose. I know I'll never censor my thoughts, but I'll try to behave lol.

I am an aspiring author. I have a few books in progress, but really I don't know if they're that good because I have nobody to read them most days. Oh well though. It won't stop me from trying.

I hope that I get to know a lot of you in the group and always feel free to send a message as well. :D

Last Passage | 2 comments Hey John,

thanks for the welcome...

You can usually get most things through amazon, but if you want an instore presence then you are going to have to get a UK Publisher perhaps either through your current publisher or your agent?

I'm not sure that I have all the answers but here's a few thoughts:

For new writers, whether traditionally or self published, the best promotional tool, other than their writing... is their writing!!

When I say that I mean contributing to blogs, forums, author interviews, magazine pieces, speaking with other authors so that they blog about you too.

A couple of Do's and Don'ts on forums...
DON'T post the same link to your book every other day in the same thread, it can get annoying - always, if you are recommending your book, state that you are the author - never use an alias to promote your work...you'll get caught!!

Above all....be yourself...its no good creating on online persona that you think people will like, just be yourself...provided you're a nice person ;0) Like an alias, you'll get caught out and any standing you had in the community will be gone...in seconds!!

Best,

Joanne

Just came across this group on Twitter and the name caught my eye. I'm an avid reader and fairly new author. My romantic drama, In Search of Lucy, has been popping in and out of Amazon's top 100 bestsellers list for drama. Feel free to ask me any questions or check out my profile or my website: http://www.liafairchild.com

Lisa James (sthwnd) Rick, TY for the invitation. I've read a scant few books on the group bookshelves, & am currently involved in 2 reading challenges, 50 Books in 2011, I'm on number 39 now :), & 1001 Books to Read Before You Die.

I'm a fairly eclectic reader, I enjoy historical fiction, some sci fi, but I prefer fantasy, not much into "true" horror but like a good psychological thriller, I like drama, but not much into typical "chick lit", I think it's trite & overdone, I enjoy books on the supernatural, occult & paranormal, basically, anything that happens to catch my eye. Although, some of the books on the 1001 list don't exactly catch my eye, I'm slogging through them anyway since I figure they will only serve to forcefully broaden my horizons :) Since I have kids, you'll also find kids' books on my bookshelves, but mostly the ones I personally read as a kid & still love to this day :)

Anyway, nice to meet all of you!

Sunflower (indeplady) | 15 comments Hi! I'm new to this community book club. I'm a publicist for a martial arts company. I just love to read. Just finished reading Kage by John Donohue and really found it to be a good read and was glad the author continued the Connor Burke martial arts thriller series. Now I am reading book #17 of Evanovitch series about the adventures of Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter. My taste in reading is "all over the board." glad to be a new member.

message 3222: by Dick (new)

Dick Peterson (dickpeterson) I'm a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Uncle Sam moved me to the Kansas City area in 1992. Now I consider myself a Kansan by residence, a Missourian by employment, a Louisianan by birth, Southern by the grace of God, and a Tybee Islander at heart. I look forward participating in the community book discussions here at James Mason.

In addition to being an avid reader, I am the author of By the Light: A Novel of Serial Homicide, a fabric of suspense highlighted with threads of romance. It is a tale of a man and woman drawn into the pursuit of a serial killer that leaves two nude bodies at the foot of the Biloxi Lighthouse. The man is a profiler who returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to care for his Alzheimer’s-stricken father. The woman is an Atlanta crime reporter and Edgar-winning author whose curiosity is piqued when she spots a wire report of the double homicide in her hometown. Travis Ford and Shay O'Connor have a past. As they discover from the corpses of couple after couple at lighthouse after lighthouse, so does a murderer that eliminates practitioners of infidelity and by signature comes to be known as Rose.

If you get a chance, follow this link to my novel's Amazon page: www.tinyurl.com/bythelight . Two of my top goals are to one day see a discussion of my book at James Mason and to get a first-edition copy of its CliffsNotes signed by Cliff himself.

Dennis Thanks for the invite Rick! Glad to join. I live just north of Pittsburgh but I am originally from the Boston area. I'm a die-hard Boston sports fan.

My full time job is a financial analyst and I enjoy playing and coaching basketball. I'm finishing graduate school this fall so my available reading time will open up. I try to read every free moment that I have although they are few and far between.

My tastes in books vary as I'll go from a Biography of a former president to a John Grisham novel. I'm open to trying new genres and hopefully will get some ideas from the group.

Thanks!

In fiction I especially (but not exclusively) like espionage/thrillers, and in non-fiction, history, languages & linguistics and travel accounts.
