PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO YOUR FELLOW JAMES MASON MEMBERS!
This is a really active group! Thanks for the invitation. I love Brit books, but blame them for my failing junior high English. I like Peter Tremayne - might not be the right spelling (Sister Fidelma books), and of course CS Lewis; Thomas Costain is a fav--got my love of dragons from his frontspiece.
Thanks for the invite Rick. I hope that I can contribute something interesting to the group.I'm a Canadian author, published two children's books before I became focused on writing adult fiction. I currently have two short stories published in the On Fiction Writing Group's Menage-a-20; Tales with a Hook anthology.
I'm working on a few manuscripts, some in progress, some in final editing stages, a couple just waiting for the right publisher. I love to read horror but I find as I learn about and read more genres, mainstream fiction is what I like to write.
I look forward to reading through all of these threads and seeing what else I can learn.
Oh, and I'm nuts. Just a warning.

GLAD YOU DID JUSTIN!!!
Hi, I'm Kathleen. My favorite authors and actors tend to be British. I've gained at least five unwanted pounds since I joined Goodreads in August. I'm sure that joining this group won't help correct that. This group is massive--but such fun!
Hi, had an invite to join and thought I should wave. I studied English lit at Cheltenham, am a total omnivor - particular favourites are Margaret Atwood, George Eliot, Isabelle Allende, Neil Gaiman, Charles De Lint, M King, Joanne Harris, Phillip K Dick, Ursula Le Guinn, Phil Rickman, Alex Morgan, Tracy Chevalier, Elizabeth Chadwick... I write for www.loveyoudivine.com and for a webcomic - www.itisacircle.com and a fictional newspaper - www.hopelessvendetta.wordpress.com I blog all over the place.
I was invited to join as well. My name is Marc Vun Kannon and Rick has started a thread for me over at the Author Forum section, so I hope I'll see or hear from you over there.
Hi, My name is Soumya. I'm currently in 9th grade getting my way through high school. I love to read.I read any kind of genre as long as it appeals to me.
Right now I have too much work to concentrate on, which isn't allowing me to read more often. But I enjoy to read for some relaxing time.
Hey ya'll -- Lynda here...Thanks for the invite Rick... I don't think I can choose a favorite British author, but certainly my friend Michael Carragher (currently residing in Dublin--hails from Newcastle) counts in the grander academic sense of "British Literature" -- I am a high school teacher, British Literature, World Literature, Greek and Roman Classics, and Creative Writing. I don't know how much I'll be able to add to this stellar crew Rick has assembled! Ya'll are simply daunting... Cheers!
Hello all! My name is Beth and I'm new to the group. (Thanks for the invite Rick!) I love to read pretty much anything and everything though I've put a new goal on myself of reading a Pulitzer (fiction or non) a month. I also read other things in between and really there's no rhyme or reason! I look forward to hearing about the books you are reading so that I can add them to my ever-growing list!

I want to thank Rick for the invitation! I'm an avid reader and an Anglophile, so this is the group for me!I'm married with 4 children, including a son with special needs. I used to be a computer programmer back in the days of punch cards but gave that up to raise the children. I'm not a writer ... I tried once but the result sounded like a systems document.
I agree with Marge .... Jane Austen and Charles Dickens are the ultimate best!

Hey, just the usual avid reading college student. Trying to finish up my degree by this May if all goes well *crosses fingers*. Until then I read whatever I have to for class and then if I have any free time it's whatever suites my mood. Big fan of Jane Austen, and I'm actual working on an independent study of her work trying to see if her motifs and symbolize is able to be cross-translatable into German as well as why the translators choose the words that they choose. Other than that, there is my German lit class and my Russian lit class that is keeping me pretty busy for now.So I'll be around, just depends on what papers I have due when.
Thank you, Rick, for the invite. I'm Lai from the Philippines. Lawyer by day and book addict at night. :DCheers everyone!

Hi Rachel,
What an interesting study you are doing! I have tried to get my German mother-in-law to read Jane Austen and have wondered if the translation was stopping her or the work itself. My German could use some work, so maybe I will try some JA auf deutsch. Where are you going to school?

Hi Rick and thank you for asking me to join. My name is Rose and I am a constant reader and collector of books. I read all genres across the board with exception to "chic-lit" or "romance". Not that I wouldn't if recommended, but definitely not my preference. I have been reading the classics for about 3 years and they have quickly become my favorite reads especially Steinbeck and Dickens.I am married with the most amazing teenage boys.
Hola chicos and chichas My name is Zayy and I love reading. But I hate libraries. They're over rated. If you keep a book for too long they fine you! (and yes I have 3 over due books. They were due in November 16. How much would I have to pay them when I give them back the books?)

I find libraries to be great. Return those books and pay the fine and then the library will be your friend again. :)

It's not as well known in the country as Madison is, but it's the 2nd place school academically in the UW system. It's about a middle size school, and is in a great city along the river.
As for the study, it sounds more intense than it really is, my German professor came up with the idea for this as an independent study just so I can read books that I know well enough, so I won't get confused on the words I don't know and still be able to earn the credits that I need to finish up my minor. And don't worry, my German isn't that great either, that's why I'm a minor. I'm good at the history, culture, and politics. My writing and reading are ok, as long as I have a dictionary, because my vocab is very limited, while my listening and speaking are my worst.

That is true but I forgot and now I dont think the library is my friend anymore and I think my mom won't be happy to pay like 73 dollars so I'll ask my dad for my bank account nd stuff hopefully!!

☻♥Zayy☻ wrote: "That is true but I forgot and now I dont think the library is my friend anymore and I think my mom won't be happy to pay like 73 dollars so I'll ask my dad for my bank account nd stuff hopefully!!"I like that my library sale books, because I can just buy books to read, unless the library has a new release that I want to read.
WELCOME TO ALL THE NEW MEMBERS- AS I ALWAYS SAY- THE GROUP BELONGS TO NO ONE PERSON- IT BELONGS TO THE MEMBERS!
Zayy, librarians (I'm one myself, so I know the breed) are generally more interested in getting their books back intact (so that other people can read them) than they are in collecting overdue fines. If you just put the books on the counter or in the book drop and leave, that will stop the fines from growing, and you probably won't hear from anybody in the library about them again (unless you want to check out something again, in which case you'll need to settle up). A lot of libraries also have "fine free days," when if you return overdue books, the fine will be forgiven --you might want to discreetly ask your local library staff if they do anything like that. :-)
Hello everyone! Thank you to Rick for the invite. I'm Sandra, and while I pay insurance claims by day, at night I have a secret identity - Writer Woman! Yes, well, it sounded more exciting than saying I'm a writer who has to keep her day job to make ends meet. I write SF - with the Anchorage series starting to release next week at Red Rose with the first novel titled "Marya".
I'm an avid reader as well and love everything from Chaucer to Huxley and everything in between.

G'day to everyone, my name is David J Delaney and another Aussie, I would truly love to thank Rick for the invitation to join his group, I hope I don't feel "out of place" amongst all the wonderful writers, academics & uni people here, I was 'kept down' twice whilst at school resulting in me being 15 when I reached high school where I stayed only 3 months then entered the workforce, I have never had any formal education in writing, all I have learnt in the literary world I have vitually taught myself over the past 3 years.
I would like to share with you all my responce to Ricks invite & I believe I will enjoy participating in this group.
G'day Rick, mate you flatter me, I actually don't feel I know a lot about Literature & my knowledge is very limited. I have only been writing & involved in the literature world since early 2007 & it was in mid november 2009, for the 1st time in my life I read Shakespear's sonnets then a small amount of info on the man himself before I wrote my 1st Shakespearean style sonnet, I will paste below for you to read, I wrote this not only for a competition but from reading how Shakespear was a champion for the poor & did not fit well with the rich.
As mentioned I am truly flattered you think me 'literary' knowledgeable, I most certainly will have a look at your group, I love the poetry I am writing & love reading about other poets & their styles, though I must admit I am not a real fan of free verse styles, I'm a rhyming poet & love all styles of rhyme.
Thank you again for your invite.

The paupers friend
Now thou hast mingled with the noble class
but they’d not see in life that which I do see,
they hold their feasts', drink from their purest glass,
in finest mansions built beside the sea.
See not the homeless begging on the street,
nor in dark laneways, wet with cold they die.
See not the children sick or with bare feet,
nor for the measly thrown out scraps they vie.
If I could forward through the frames of time
to lands afar unheard of now by thee,
would not thine eyes view pestilence and crime,
would still there be fine mansions by the sea.
Where still are those who sleep in laneways cold,
where nobles, whom for wealth their souls they’ve sold.

Welcome to the group. Your poem certainly is well-written and gives me a lot to think about. What was true in Shakespeare's time certainly applies in our time (sad fact). I really like the vivid imagery in your piece, too. (I'm not a scholar, either. I just like to read and discuss books.)

Thanks Rachel! I am going to attempt Persuasion in German now! :)
Thanks for the invitation, Rick. I'm a Canadian novelist. I took an innovative approach with my debut novel - Until the Deep Water Stills: An Internet-enhanced Novel - by giving it an optional, online companion with text, imagery and audio recordings. For anyone interested, my author website is www.mdyetmetaphor.com. The novel online companion is located at www.mdyetmetaphor.com/blog. Michael
Hi all! Thanks, Rick for the invitation! It looks like a great group. My name is Kim, but since there are a LOT of Kims on the boards, I use "Miss GP" - a nickname bestowed on me by the moderator another group. (It stands for "Miss Grouchy-pants" -- long story). Anyway, I'm a computer tech by day, a book reviewer for an online magazine by night. I much prefer the latter job... now if only it paid a living wage! I love to read, but also enjoy spending time in the great outdoors (winter sports like xc ski & snow shoe, summer sports like kayaking, hiking & backpacking). I'm married, no kids, two cats, originally from Cleveland, now living in Portland, Oregon. That's pretty much me in a nutshell. Looking forward to knowing y'all better!
hello! I'm Maryann. I love writing and maybe I'd like to be an author. Still double minded. I read a variety of books, different genres etc etc. Honoured to be part of the group :D Um.. I love Shakespeare's Hamlet, Twelfth Night and Julius Caesar. Hamlet and Julius Caesar were also available in an audio book so I listened to that too. Now that I read those books, I can hear them in the back of my head lol Let's not forget Jane's Pride and Prejudice. Well, yes I guess that's it. Thanks for the invite!!
Hey!Rick, thank you for asking me to join. It's an honor!
Anyway, this is Professor Glenn Brandon Burke. I'm a speaker, author, educator and columnist.
Should you desire to know more about me, you may do so at www.GlennBrandonBurke.com.
Here's to everybody's happiness!
Sincerely,
