Richard Barager Hello, all!

My name is Richard and I would like to thank Rick for inviting me to join this dynamic group. I posted my first Goodreads book review yesterday, on a novel by Richard Powers called "The Echo Maker," a real gem.

I am a physician who blogs on the healing power of literature and on the nexus of medicine and literary fiction. My first novel is due for publication 6/1/11: "Altamont Augie," a work of historical fiction set in the 1960s. There is a powerful and moving book trailer that captures the essence of the novel up on my author web site: http://richardbarager.com

I'm currently reading "Anna Karenina"--this may take a while!

Thanks again for having me.

Anna Karenina is one of the Russian works I always recommend after getting into the flow with some Pushkin and Gogol. War and Peace is a little to sprawling to start Tolstoy with.
If you have never tried Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, I highly recommend it. One can see why his rich writing had such an immense influence on subsequent Russ. Lit.

welcome Richard- I am facinated by the term-"the healing power of literature" it seems as if that can be a topic in itself- really would love to hear more about that.

On the blog I maintain on my author web site, richardbarager.com., I frequently write about the importance and role of literary fiction in aiding patients and physicians alike to better comprehend human illness--a field of medicine known as narrative medicine. See my recent Goodreads book review of "The Echo Maker" as an example of how literary fiction and medicine can be integrated in a healing way.

Elizabeth Cobbs | 9 comments Thanks for the invite. I am a historian, and now a historical novelist as well. Broken Promises, A Novel of the Civil War, will be released on March 29 by Random House. Target stores have adopted it for their "Break-out" book club. I am all a-shiver! Look for the novel on "end-caps" across America starting April 3. That's my new favorite word in American English: end-caps. So lovely. http://www.amazon.com/Broken-Promises...

Favorite authors: Richard Russo, David Liss, Annie Proulx, John Irving, Patrick O'Brian (especially!), Dickens, Austen, etc...

Hi Rick, Thanks for inviting me to this group.

I had been bypassing it because of the title: James Mason (a fine actor, but only books about him?) and Book Club (I thought I'd have to read what others were reading and then discuss). But you've set it up so that's just one of many possibilities! :-) And I don't have to know any JM trivia (whew!).

My reading is an eclectic mix of books with a high appreciation of good literary fiction, police procedural mysteries (no thrillers, please), and short stories. I also read historical fiction, science nonfiction and speculative fiction.

I am also an author with twelve published titles: historical fiction, speculative fiction, contemporary fiction and YA nonfiction. More info at my Web site. I have a small business through which I edit and complete book (and ebook) layouts for other authors--covers, too. I maintain two blogs and four dot coms, an FB page, and participate in seasonal art shows with my Photo Art.

Even with all that, I spend a great deal of time on GoodReads, and I look forward to finding new reads and authors, and trying to stay with all the lively discussions going on in this group.

Best to everyone.

Norm Applegate | 1 comments Thanks Rick, I live in Sarasota, and I write thrillers, horror and paranormal mostly. My Into the Basement novel is about abduction, torture and sexual slavery. I also wrote Blood Bar, which is about vampires and a different kind of club. Into the Spell, is a hypnosis paranormal thriller, you know, the dark side of the occult.

My latest book is First To Die, a vampire adventure not for vegetarians. It's a bit more violent and juicy than my other books, but there is a sliver of breathing room. Expect a lot of violence, knives, pain, carve in, carve out. My Kim Bennett is a bent woman.

I’m also a Mac Fanatic. Smooth Jazz enthusiast. Drummer. Horror Movie Fan.

Hi everyone (and thanks, Rick, for the invitation)! I'm a young adult sci-fi/fantasy author. My novel, _Shelby and Shauna Kitt and the Dimensional Holes_ is currently competing for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (please consider reading it and posting a review!). I like to read young adult fiction and fantasy, and also enjoy British literature classics (in particular Victorian novels).

Best,

Brian Rowe | 13 comments Thanks, Rick!! Yes, more about my debut novel... Well, I spent two years working in feature film casting in Los Angeles, and I felt like there was a great story to be told there, about an intelligent, volatile female casting director who uses her job not to cast actors in movies, but to find a young hunk to seduce and have sex with! I just put it up for 99 cents on Amazon and would love to get feedback from readers! It's funny and scandalous and tragic and very much R-rated!! haha. check it out!

C.C. Cole (authorcccole) | 10 comments That is very generous....I'll say most people that like my books like the the strong female lead character Shevata, she's a very capable assassin that doesn't look dangerous, as she's a "young" 16-year-old. It's a medevial backdrop, and interested readers/reviewers/bloggers are welcome to contact me via Goodreads for my blog for more details. I'm looking forward to see what the other great authors on Goodreads have coming!!

My book, Married to Bhutan, comes out April 1st, so I'm in a frenzy. I just mailed out 10 copies to the winners of the book giveaway that finished yesterday. I keep going back to a wonderful book I've read many times, but I find it very calming and centering-- Rumer Godden's Thus Far and No Further. She's also my favorite British author just now. Cheers all
