Thanks so much. It's very kind of you to say. It's a tough road trying to get a novel off the ground, but those who have read it have been very encouraging, so I'm hoping word of mouth can spread it. I was so tired of reading the same old stories with a new twist, that I set out to write a story that's never been told before. Many have told me I succeeded, so I'm hoping.

Regards and thanks again, Ed.

Well, if you can actually disprove Shakespeare's, "There is nothing new under the sun," you may become quite famous, indeed!

I'm hoping to disprove Shakespeare. Someone I know very well told me she always can figure out where a plot is going. After she read my novel, she told me I not only disproved her once, but three times. And family and friends can be your worst critic...which I'm sure everybody knows.

Cherryh, Stephen Baxter, Sean Williams and I've also been known to enjoy the odd book by Robin Hobb. I have published short stories at professional magazines, an am looking to make a foray into ebooks.

Fate Is the Hunter were a staple on my bookshelf.

Judy (judygreeneyes) | 19 comments Hi all -- I'm Judy in California. I read voraciously, a bit of everything, but very little in certain genres, like chick lit. I really like stories with well-developed characters. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi and urban fantasy. I'm also a addicted to bookcrossing. Some favorite authors: John Varley, Kim Stanley Robinson, Spider Robinson, Robert Sawyer, Barbara Kingsolver, Sheri Tepper, Margaret Atwood. I often read multiple books at once, including one on my ipod and one on my Kindle. I always like to hear about what other people are reading and enjoying.

I worked all my life in statistics and Quality fields, much of it in high tech, and have travelled alot internationally. I tend to be a good problem solver and systems thinker.

I love your name also. I've written a novel and the protagonist's name is Lucien. He's a prince of darkness. Sadly, I can't finish the story now--conflicts with the publisher. Nevertheless, Lucien will not die.

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Greetings one and all and Aloha from Hawaii. This is a great group, and I at first came through the back door, without an invite, but now I got the official word. Thanks Rick, once again. I am not an author, I am into genealogy at the present and finding it fascinating. My ancestor came in the 1817's to Hawaii, led an illustrious life, had businesses, and I find it all fascinating. I may write a book about all that I have culled about this man.

Hi, Jerry. I am a huge Gann fan. I discovered one of his former airplanes at the Van Nuys Airport many years ago. I believe it was a Seabee. I have a friend who's an airline pilot, who met Gann several times socially. He said Gann was a charming fellow. I wish I had met him. Reading Gann's novels was instrumental in turning me into a novelist.

Hey there Karl, while some of the aviation novels set in the age of jet engines can certainly be thrilling when in the hands of a good writer, it seems that Gann's depiction of the early days of commercial flight in DC8's, for example, with navigators, maps, bad coffee and no air-traffic controllers, made even routine cargo runs exciting; kind of like crop dusters at 10,000 feet.

Hi, Jerry. Yup. Gann's best friend (I think his name was Lonnie) held seniority #1 with American! So that was a long time ago! But the thing I like most about his books is the writing style. Gann eventually developed a style that is unique: very, very smooth; it makes me think of whipped cream, or riding on a conveyor belt. The writing sucks you in. You don't see the underpinnings, but just the pictures that he's creating in your head. His earlier works lack this. Island In The Sky, for instance, is a little rough around the edges -- a novelist still honing his craft. By the way, I assume you meant to say DC-2's and 3's. The DC-8 was a jet.

I stand corrected...DC-2's. I read him back in the 60's while in high school and haven't read him since. Can you recommend one of his 'whipped cream' works? Nicely put by the way.

message 2198: by Karl (new)

Karl Friedrich | 31 comments Well, it wasn't a word; it was the way he strung words together. All of my Gann's are in storage in the garage, so I'm unable to look at them. The best way to describe his writing: There was a slickness to the sentences. Beyond the storytelling and its imagery, the sentences were constructed in a way that was satisfying, like a good meal. It wasn't flamboyant. It wasn't done to show off or to impress the reader. It was simply astounding talent, like the brush stroke of a great painter. I've gotta go get a haircut now. Talk to you later. Karl

Anyway, happy reading, and see you on list!
