I recall hearing similar- I have not had one of them little fellas for a while- but it seemed when I did- the cedar shavings were the only things available- you know that they are descendants of the Cavy

Eric Hendrixson | 1 comments This is the most developed discussion group I have seen, so I thank Rick for the invitation.

I am an avid reader of fiction and poetry. My writing is primarily Bizarro fiction and formal poetry, two of the more difficult types of writing to place. However, Eraserhead Press picked up my Bizarro noir novella, Bucket of Face, last year. If I'd joined this group two days ago, I would have directed people to my giveaway, which ended on Valentine's Day.

While I read widely, I have a special attraction to fiction that is weird in some way and to poetry with a narrative or in form.

The CD in my car stereo right now is Jeremy Irons reading Lolita. The last book I read was Angel Dust Apocalypse, and the book I am currently reading (for probably the fourth time) is Golden Gate.

Rick, yes they do have sweet mouths, so tiny and pink. Oliver is a great name for a guinea pig, that's my grandson's name. :)

I’ve read that wood shavings are okay, but only if they’re aspen or pine, also wood pellets covered in shaving, but you should avoid cedar, corncob bedding, and straw.

Processed paper products are okay, and also shredded newspaper as ink is supposed to be soy based now. However, I use towels and mats in their house but I change them every day. I also add hay, and fresh grass that I pick fresh daily. They do need some wood to chew on too, good quality pellets, veggies and fruit. Here is a link to the best guineapig website ever: http://www.guinealynx.info/pellets.html

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi Patricia,
I'd leave out the pine, the resin in it is definitely a no-no. Always stick to hard wood shavings. As for straw, avoid the stuff with 'harns' Rye, barley or durum wheat. We always found the best was oat straw, soft and little in the way of spray as the farmers grew oats to feed their own stock. Our little squeekers and grunters loved it. They would spend hours arranging it and nibbling it to get it how they wanted it.
Hay is good too but these days a lot of it has been mouldy, because the people producing it are to impatient, now were have I heard that before!
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 57 comments Timothy, I play it safe and use only towels and mats, then add grass and hay for food. My Boofhead got bumblefoot, but hasn't had it since he's had soft mats to run around on. He has a nice soft bed which he loves too. We let him run around our garden for hours every day. We live in the country on acreage.

Oh, my piggies had the run of our large lounge room too, but always supervised.

Is this a guinea pig picnic? LOL.

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi Carmel,
Stop confusing the new comers, never mind me! After I'd worn out my knee pads I thought we had ended up as sooty and sweep, but then I can't remember either of them wearing a kilt! On the other hand Messrs Eric and Ern did on occasions. Stop it!! I must find that picture of Angie in THAT little kilt, AAH the memories of a long gone youth!!

P.S. like I said, welcome to the 'mad house' Eric. We do have some serious discussions here, but my memory is failing on that one, must be my age!

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 38 comments hello, I am Michele. I am 63 currently living in NH with my in laws. I have had an eventful life: I am a survivor of spousal abuse that eventually resulted in my permanent disability. sigh. My 2nd marriage crashed and burned after 29 years. I've lived in numerous places in various parts of the country. My first step after moving to a new location: locate the local library. I buy a few books on my limited income. I try to enjoy my life as much as possible. I am a fierce advocate on behalf of battered women, the disabled and the elderly and vulnerable. I read voraciously: 10-12 books a week. I like fiction and prefer a touch of humor in the books I read. sarcasm and self deprecation are acceptable. I read some history and some books about migraines since that is my main disability. Kind of hard to find work if you have 3 or 4 migraines a week. And sometimes my migraines don't go away. My longest migraine lasted 2 and 1/2 yrs! I call that my black hole period. I was a founding member of the manchester (NH) women's crises service in 1979. Active as public speaker on the issue of violence against women until 1985. I only write in my journal and only when I am upset and need to vent. Thank you for the invitation. I hope to find a little humor here. I can always find time to laugh or giggle.

Hello all! Agree with all of the preceeding, except do not forget that words can do just as much damage in the negative way. That is the only reason I quit a large Poetry group this morning, because in the name of trying to help one as a poet, a gang of borderline personality types exercise mockery and the injudicious tempers of boars or chimps.

But, welcome, everyone new, it goes without saying. We get along famously here and I have never been berated yet.

message 2089: by [deleted user] (new)

I recall Lucian, the ancient writer (of Samosata?), but never saw it spelled with an e. More French perhaps?

Ummmm, why berate someone? We are not in some Lords of Discipline farce are we? Hiding behind a computer and being unkind, now there is courage for you!

Sorry you had to be exposed to that kind of immature behavior.

And you used your words to describe the incident beautifully.

We are generally a tolerant group-even when we violently disagree on someone or something. : )

message 2094: by [deleted user] (new)

My second book Caring for Eleanor, takes Salma from my first book, to her first marriage earlier on, goes into all sorts of descriptions about spousal abuse. Fiction is lots of truth mixed in with imagination.

I found that real life is much harsher when I write. Have to tone things down. Amazing!

message 2095: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I think real life is some truth-whatever that is, facts?-mixed in with a lot of imagination.
T.S. Eliot has my all-time favorite quote: Humankind cannot bear too much reality.
