Hello,I'm a mystery writer, a midwestern transplant living in Wilmington NC, which is to say, I live in the South, but I am by no means a Southern Writer. You can take the girl out of Cincinnati, but you can't take the Cincinnati out of the girl.
My latest book Tree Huggers is a novel of greed, murder and helpful household hints. Single mom Kate Dennison takes a reporting job at a local newspaper, expecting city council meetings and school pageants, but ends up covering a double murder.
All my royalties from Tree Huggers are donated to Phoenix Employment Ministries, (http://www.phoenixwork.org) a non-profit organization that helps homeless people find work.

Judy, that sounds awesome! I can just see the headline: SOCCER MOM SOLVES DOUBLE-MURDER WHILE REMOVING BLOODSTAINS FROM CASHMERE AND WOOL WITH PEANUT BUTTER. Sort of like the McGyver of cozies! I like it! Sounds like the beginning of a series. I wish I'd thought of that. What a great pitch for agents, too. Is there a link for an excerpt that I can read? Where's the book available? Great cause, too.
Hi my name is Sharond'ah, and I enjoy most kinds of fiction but prefer books written pre- 1980 as I love the 1970's- the books, TV Shows and the music. Thanks Rick for the invite

Hi Judy,
Welcome to the group! What parts of Cincinnati haven't left you? I'm living near Cincinnati now. Do you still say "Please?" instead of "Excuse me?" or "Would you repeat that?"?
Good luck with your book and we hope that you enjoy the group.

Good morning. I am a Los Angeles-based writer (soon to move to the Missouri Ozarks). I'm not going to be on a reality show about LA housewives!
I have tried my hand at flash fiction (love it); poetry (one main title out) and am now in the middle of a YA trilogy. The first book, which is really the second in the series, is out, "Some Rivers End on the Day of the Dead." It is a coming-of-age novel celebrating Hispanic heritage.
My main interests in life are my writing, my family, and my dogs. I love using the Internet sites such as goodreads. In a prior life (5 years ago), I taught high school English for 34 years.
Peace. Eileen

Thank you Rick for inviting me to join your group. I'm a retired Communication professor who has found a new bliss in writing and publishing cozy mysteries. My retired Air Force hubby and I reside in Illinois, but we've lived all over the country. We both are passionate readers, but I'm the only writer in the family. My book is entitled "Sounds of Murder" and my heroine solves crimes using acoustic technology. My favorite genre is the mystery (primarily the cozy mystery), but I also like thrillers and some science fiction (particularly Dean Koontz and Robert J. Sawyer).

We're more Reds fans, honestly. The Bengals never seem to do very well, even in "winning" seasons! I hope the Lions do better than the Bengals are this year. :-)
Welcome, Eileen. 34 years teaching English, huh? My goodness! I've been doing that for 11 years now, so you've got 23 years on me! (I don't know if I could make it for that long!) What's your secret for secondary education survival?
@Judy, OK, so Cincinnati's not exactly south, but it is just a spit across the river to Kentucky.B^)
Welcome.

Hi,I'm Vanessa and I live in Northern California. I love most genres, but mystery/thrillers are my favorite. I also read romantic suspense, some historical romances, and Science Fiction/Fantasy.
Hello, I'm Emma from Bristol, UK. Thanks for inviting me to join this group Rick - there is certainly a lot of lively discussion here! Books are one of my passions in life and I read pretty widely - I love contemporary literary fiction, classics, history and historical fiction, fantasy and magical realism but I'll attempt almost anything! Oh and I have six year old twins who love reading as well so I've read a mountain of kids books too.

My Review
AN extraordinarily original book- so well written and plotted that the reader is instantly pulled into the unique world the very talented David Elliot has created. In a time where so many books read like "seen it, read it already" - what a joy to find a novel that is so many steps above in character development, plot and location detail- highly recommended!!!

THATS GREAT DAVE!!
Some very very beautiful poems- everyone should check out the link!
Hope you don't mind me reprinting my favorite here...
New Generation Veterans
We honour our old veterans, we honour them with pride
and read of all the horrors they have carried deep inside.
We know they served in Asia or New Guinea’s highland rains,
Vietnam or in Africa where many men were slain.
We know that fateful landing on Gallipoli’s dark shore,
wherever Aussies fought, we know there are so many more,
but now a new young generation needs our help as well,
they too have been to war and suffer with their private hell.
Though losses are not classed as great, their fears are just the same
those electronic hidden bombs, still injure, kill or maim.
They fight against an enemy they find so hard to see
who mingle in the market place, then cause much tragedy.
Insurgents in Afghanistan hide in the rough terrain
or roaming in Iraq, where, wearing robes they look the same.
The suicide stealth bombers, don’t care who they hurt or kill,
then, with their own beliefs, they try to break our forces will.
Our fighting Aussie spirit shows on any foreign land,
they’re in the skies, they’re on the sea, or on the desert sand.
Now many are returning with the horrors they still see
and living with their nightmares, suffering bureaucracy.
I know on ANZAC day, we all remember with a tear,
but all vets young or old, they need our help throughout the year,
support and listen to their stories, when they do get told,
lets honour our new veterans, just like we do our old.

Thank you Rick & yes Sharond'ah you may. You might like this one as well.
Still they fight the fight
They walk the shifting sand like those who went before,
now in that ancient land still fighting in a war.
They once again defend, the young answer the call,
joined by their Kiwi friends, they’re ANZAC’s proud and tall.
While now the Hum-vee’s rule where once were camel trains,
and desert life is cruel, support we must sustain.
———
They fly the open skies like those who went before,
though fear is in their eyes, they hope to end this war.
Insurgents hidden well, with missiles in their hands.
At times it must be hell to fly those hostile lands.
Now in their super jets, not like those planes of old.
I hope no one forgets, the sacrifices told.
———
They sail the oceans wide like those who went before,
with allies by their side, protecting ports and shores.
They’re boarding suspect ships that could have contraband,
then, guiding battleships, support those on the land.
They glide on ‘Omans’ waves, or ghosts in submarines
and, many lives they save, on daily scout routines.
———
The young now fight the fight, like those so long ago.
Believing this is right to beat the hidden foe.
When home they all return and nightmares are now told,
these visions will confirm, they’ll need someone to hold.
So with each morning light, respect for ever more,
for they’ve all earned this right — like those who went before.

Hi, My name is Judith or Judi and I joined Goodreads for little over a year. I have been active since around May, 2010. Thank you Rick for inviting and introducing me to this book club. I live outside of Buffalo, NY, but moved here from Atlanta. Having been raised in the North I feel like I have finally "come home". We love it here because we have beautiful summers and cold but beautiful winters.
I love all books and I'm open to all genres but I particularly like historical fiction, mystery thrillers, Chinese, Russian and English literature. I'm not particularly fond of of sci/fi but I do do like some Stephen King. Right now, I'm just finishing up The Book Thief and Full Dark, No Stars on CD. I have just discovered Kate Morton and I love her three books that she has out, The House at Riverton, The Forgotten Garden (my favorite, so far) and The Distant Hours. I know I will enjoy this book club.

Hey everyone! My name is Stephanie, I'm 22 years old and a graduate student residing in Chicago, Illinois. I'm studying Clinical Forensic Psychology and hope to eventually put my skills to use working with the offender population.I love reading, and have loved it since I was a small child. I seemed to have done things backwards. When I was younger I read a lot of heavy books: Stephen King, Tolkien, VC Andrews, etc. and then of course there's the course load you get in high school of all the classics, so nowadays and I tend to stick to three genres: Children's Fiction, Young adult fiction, and mystery/thrillers (with a feminine twist).
I'm currently reading The Mysterious Benedict Society series and my last two completed books was The Last Olympian (#5 of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordian) and The Girl Who Played With Fire (#2 of the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson).
I'm looking forward to some great discussions here!

Hello new friends! Rick kindly invited me into the group. I don't really know what to say about myself. In the last couple of years I seem to be drawn more to nonfiction reading, but it all evolves from year to year. Some overall favorite writers are Maugham, Hesse, Salinger, just for a start. I'm a great music and movie lover also.I'm a semi-employed teacher, had a first career working as a literary monitor in a recorded books studio. I write myself, but the publishing world is such a terrifying mystery to me I don't know how to even get started trying to get published.
I look forward to many great conversations with you all!
