Rick wrote: great title!! Dead to Writes"Thanks! The main character is an author, so each book in the series has the word "write" replacing "right" or "rite."
Great group Rick and thanks for the invite. My name is Ryan Adam Smith (you can check out my Goodreads profile if you are interested) and I am the author of novel Below Sunlight which can best be described as a whiskey fueled novel with lots of passion, lust, humor, and mystery (maybe).

Thanks Rick for the invitation. My name is Jesse S. Hanson. I'm the author of Song of George: Portrait of an Unlikely Holy Man in the genre, Spiritual Fiction (I am concerned with promoting it as a unique genre). http://jesseshanson.wordpress.com/words/
I like a great variety of things, although I am much more attracted to books with "something to say" rather than those for entertainment value alone.

Hi, I'm Bill. Thanks for the invite to the group, Rick. I come from Vancouver Island, Canada and am an ex-serving member of the Canadian Forces. I love reading, any genre, although my favourite type of novel at present tends towards mystery. Having said that, I'm currently reading a historical fiction novel, AC Doyle's The White Company and a horror/ ghost story by Kingsley Amis, The Green Man.I look forward to checking out this club.
Hello. I would like to appreciate having invited from The JAMES MASON COMMUNITY. My name is Yuto and currently started to have the interest to English literature. Although my previous life was the one which is far from reading books, I think that I would like to read more and more to get knowledge through the wide range of English literature.I love The Poe Shadow by Matthew Pearl.
I'm Mike Brecon, a freelance writer, and I live in the UK. I've been a member of Goodreads since August and my latest book, A Dangerous Remedy, has been published by SynergEbooks.
Waving to everyone.I'm Gilly, I'm new as of today. I live in the UK, on the West Lancs Moors and have had many career incarnations but my current one is as freelance (mostly comedy) writer. My favourite books are The Pickwick Papers, The Secret History and The Shadow of the Wind. I'm currently browsing my way through old threads so you'll probably find me popping up here and there for a while till I catch up. :)

Thank you for inviting me, Rick! I work in a library, and love to read - children's, young adult, and adult books. My tastes vary, but I like Southern US, British, some fantasy or "paranormal", and sometimes some light "chick lit". Looking forward to getting more suggestions, because as we all know, you can never read too many books!

Hi Rick,Many thanks for the invitation to the group. I am formerly an editor at Random House and the BBC, but now I have become a novelist. My debut novel, The Art of Devotion was just published by Simon and Schuster in June of this year. I look forward to getting involved with the group.

So happy you are enjoying James Mason Group! Bennett Cerf was such a witty man- hepublished so many humor books as well as edited many anthologies- his stories about his encounters with Gertrude Stein are especially hilarious! I read AT RANDOM - the memoirs he was writing at the time of his death- so sad he never finished the project. I loved him on WHAT'S MY LINE- a perfect gentleman and so refined

Thanks for the invite Rick! This looks like a really interesting and diverse group. =)Hey all!
By day, I'm a physical scientist who does data analysis, works with climate and ocean models, and enjoys visualizing results.
By night, I'm a reader, a listener, and a dreamer.
I read sporadically AND also enjoy audiobooks.
I love fantasy (from juvenile to epic), but any good book will do... although I generally stay away from non-fiction. Every now and then I go back and try to read a classic that my HS/College English classes never required...and there are lots!
In my rather non-existent spare time, I like to:
1) create stained glass (I'm a beginner - on my second peice!),
2) knit (socks, scarves, hats, mittens, etc. some lacework),
3) watch good movies (for exp. The Last Mimzy, but this list could be very long...),
4) watch TV (things I DVR include Community, 30 Rock, Dr. Who, The Good Guys, Psych),
5) and go for walks through the woods.
I like to laugh and be happy, and generally have a positive attitude. I'm also a pretty open minded and forgiving person.
There I am in a nutshell. Look forward to chatting with you!

Hello everyone, my name is Ruth and I live in New Zealand.I read prolifically and fast. If I don't watch myself I mostly read History, Mystery, Travel, and SciFi but I am watching myself carefully at the moment to ensure I read widely.
To this end I have just set myself the task of reading all of the Mann-Booker prize winners (as I come across them - won't be hunting them down frenetically). This years choice of a graphic novel should make it fun!
Classic literature varies: I love Shakespeare, Conan Doyle and Jane Austen but generally dislike the Bronte sisters and Dickens (too overwrought and Victorian for me).
Stuart Kaminsky is, I think, my favourite author. Particularly his books set in Russia. Brilliant.
Looking forward to reading more and being part of this group.

so glad to have you as a member Ruth!! Welcome!!
I purchaed Wolf Hall when it came out- but have yet to read it- I believe it is a Mann-Booker winner- for some reason I felt compelled to purchase it at full cost at Barnes and Noble

Wolf Hall I loved, I got it cheap (NZ $20 = $15 US). I was so excited, a Tudor period Mann-Booker! I am very much looking forward to the sequel even though I know it has to end badly (the problem with historical novels based on well known characters). She has such a unique writing style. I recently read the siege of Krishnapur, by J.G Farrell, another excellent Mann-Booker winner. Farrell is the only author to have won twice (one posthumously, and several years after the writing).
As an aside, I am the book critic for a NZ journal, Employment Today. These are management / human resource books (day job= HR). I don't get paid for reviews but I get to keep the books, which means more to me anyway.

Just realised that I had one too many n's in Man! Apologies. The Man group plc have sponsored the Booker prize since 2002. Prior to this it was the Booker-McConnell and then just the Booker.
BUT I have no idea who or what Booker is/was!
Man are an alternative investment company managing $43Billion of investments and Booker are a 'Cash n' Carry' wholesaler to primarily the UK catering industry, although they do supply a lot of corner shops as well and own a chain of frozen food stores.

where's the POE thread gone? Channel 4 aired the first episode (2 1/2hrs)of the new POE series last nite, starring Ian Mc Shane. My son says it was gripping stuff and Follet himself rates it highly. Unfortunately I was busy writing my latest book and will comment when I have watched it and let you all know my ten pence worth.
Roy
we had a buddyread for THE POE SHADOW by Matthew Pearl- is that what you are referring to? I dont believe we has a thread solely devoted to Poe- although there are several threads that you can post comments on him- FAVORITE WRITER, TV SHOWS THREADS ect
Always feel free to start your own threads also- as I have purposely set the Group to allow Members to start their own threads- as a Community rather then simply a Group- I consider every Member a moderator!

Thank you for the invitation. I am Scott, an Art Teacher and avid reader. I just finished Ken Follet's PILLARS OF THE EARTH, and will be reading ROOM next.
Hi All,Thanks for the invitation. I'm a still-licensed real estate agent who writes cozy-style mysteries with a Realtor protagonist. As far as I know, I'm the only person who fits that description. LOL.
There are three books in the series so far. You can read more about them here on Goodreads or use my website http://www.goodreadmysteries.com if you'd like to read the opening chapters for a sense of what the books are like.
Oh, and since Realtors sometimes bake cookies at open houses to entice buyers, and the protagonist Regan McHenry does that, there had to be a recipe. You can pick up a copy of her recipe at the website while you are there and try them if you're brave!
Scott wrote: "Thank you for the invitation. I am Scott, an Art Teacher and avid reader. I just finished Ken Follet's PILLARS OF THE EARTH, and will be reading ROOM next."I hope you love ROOM. I did. You'll never forget the wonderful voice of Jack. :)
Howdy! I'm Justin, a musician, corporate lackey and avid reader. I lean towards non-fiction but always enjoy a great novel. I look forward to some great discussions and discovering new books to read. Thanks to Rick for inviting me into the fold.
