Hi everyone. I'm glad to be here.I write under my own name, Brian Jackson. I'm more commonly known as Mr. Melanie Jackson ;-).

welcome Brian and Joseph!
Joseph- When I started Group last Oct- it was meant to be a tribute to my favorite actor James Mason- I am amazed and so pleased it has expanded so to include all genres/topics- a very nice place to stop by! As for the name- I know it may give newcomers second thoughts about joining it- but I can never -and will never- bring myself to alter it- as James Mason was the original reason this whole Group started!
That is why I really hope all invite friends to join- friends who would enjoy our Group but see the title and feel they must be experts on Classic British Lit- that is not the case at all!! so everyone- invite away!!

In all my years watching Johnny Carson and David Letterman, I've always wished that the guests would turn the tables and start interviewing the host.
So, here goes...
First, congratulations on having built such a large and successful group. But the first question is obvious...
How do you find the time to read all that you do and still moderate and grow such a huge group?
I'm impressed.
P.S. My wife is sitting next to me, and she's impressed too ;-).
Thanks for the invite!I'm a SAHM and a novelist (HOW TO BE AN AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE). I am always looking for new book suggestions. I like reading outside of my writing genre (women's fiction), especially creative non fiction.
Well thanks Rick for the invite :). My name is Loren, but feel free to call me Lo for short. I'm 20 years old and I've been reading forever, I guess since I actually could read LOL. I will read anything but my passion has always been the supernatural, paranormal, aspect of it all. Every since I read my first Steven King or Christopher Pike book. So for at least these last two years I've basically read in these genres.
Can't wait to pick some of your brains! And with that, toodles.

A great big hello to everyone! :) I'm Nikki! I've been writing for about five years experimenting with every genre and listening to the demanding voices of my characters in my head and their irresistible pouty faces when I don't discuss them with others. I love to read and put in a few opinions of the books I've read. Judging all the earlier comments and discussions it sounds like my kind of group! Thank you Rick!

It's my latest blog:
In the recent dust-up between Jodi Picoult and Jonathan Franzen, Picoult said Austen was a popular novelist. Was she right?

Yes, Lev, despite her present status as a classical and "canonical" writer, Austen's novels were popular in her own time --and continue to be with many readers, even though her style of diction is no longer in fashion. It was only in the mid-20th century that the critical establishment decided that, since ordinary people are cretinous yahoos, no books they like can be "great" or "classical." By then, though, she was already part of the received "canon," so they couldn't just drop her down the memory hole.
Sorry, Werner, you are wrong. The facts in my blog speak against her having been popular in her own time.
Well, Lev, it wouldn't be the first time I've found that I was, as the Fonz on Happy Days once put it, "Wr... wro... not right!" :-) Thanks for the link to your blog post; I'll have to read that ASAP, and do a bit more research on this end as well.
Hey everyone thanks rick for the invitation. My names Amanda and Im new to this site so bear with me if I dont respond fast or don't have alot of books listed but I'm working on it!
Lev, I finally got a chance to read your very well-researched and informative blog post this morning. I think our difference isn't so much substantive as just semantic, depending on what we mean by "popular." It isn't incorrect, IMO, to describe Austen as (moderately) popular in her own day; but it's also true, as you've definitely established, that she had nothing like the following that her most popular literary contemporaries did. We're probably getting somewhat off-topic, on a thread intended for new members to introduce themselves. I've just started a Jane Austen thread (here's the link: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4... ), so anyone interested can pursue more Austen discussion there. Lev, your blog post would be a great resource for that discussion. Could you post a link there? (I don't think I have the URL fully enough to type it there myself.) Thanks a bunch!

I'm a lifelong reader and a big fan of movies, classic and modern. My favorite genres for both are sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, though I'll try to read anything that's good. I recently published my first novel, a sci-fi fantasy adventure called Shard Mountain, that I would recommend to anyone who likes a good story about the future.
