lINDA- Welcome to our Group!
I found Gulliver's Travels to be a facinating yet slow read - in that it was all told by Gulliver with descriptions- with very little actual dialogue - I prefer books wirh multiple characters and many concersations - how are you finding it?
Dracula I remember enjoying quite a bit- was many years since I read it- was it an epistole novel?all Letters?

Shay | 528 comments Hello Everyone. Thank you to Rick for the invitation. I'm originally from Hawaii, but have lived in Las Vegas for about 12 years. I have a BA in philosophy and a MS in Elementary Education. I was a teacher, but had to leave because my son can't attend school on a regular basis, therefore I couldn't attend school on a regular basis. I have three kids and work from home, mostly. I'm finding the more groups I join, the more unread books I am accumulating. Look forward to adding many more.

message 706: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) | 16 comments Hello Rick and fellow booklovers. I'm Jan from Perth in Western Australia. I love books, family and friends, ice-skating, tap dancing, rollerblading, singing, walking in the bush or along the beach, cooking,tv and movies. I have two grown up sons as well as an eighteen year old daughter who still lives with my husband and me. I also have two darling little granddaughters. In recent years I have read a lot of biographies, but I would like to get back to reading more fiction, and I think goodreads will encourage me to do this. The task of listing all my books(so far I've only done two rooms)has confronted me with the realisation that I've spent far too much time browsing the booksale tables and not enough time actually reading my books! So my mid-year resolution is "less shopping, more reading". I'm not having any trouble implementing this concept as I broke my arm on 26th May...so I can't drive. Stuck at home with my computer and my books has lead not only to a re-evaluation of how I spend my time, but also to the discovery of goodreads and hence new books and new friends from all over the world.
Favourite book...Pride and Prejudice.
Favourite movie...Out of Africa
Favourite British comedy...Fawlty Towers
Favorite American comedy...Seinfeld
Favourite artist...Monet
Highly recommend:David Copperfield,Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman, Wild Swans, The Power of one, The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime, A Child called It by David Pelzer and Child of the Jungle by Sabine Kuegler

message 712: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (romalisa) Ciao! I am Lisa and up until about two years ago, I would read at least two or more books at one time and usually finished them within a week. Lately, though, I've been drawn into the world of podcasts and have not been reaching much. Instead, the podcasts (like the Classic Tales Podcast -- Poe, Dickens, Lovecraft, and others---performed by the incredible B.J. Harrison) have taken up most of the time I would normally devote to reading and/or watching TV.

I do miss reading, and am now in the middle of A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge (won from a GoodReads.com contest!!) and waiting to start Betrice Small's The Shadow Queen/Book Five of the World of Hetar, as soon my mom finishes it:) The former is very dense and requires much attention to truly appreciate all of the detailed world-building while the latter series is in the sub-genre of Erotic Fantasy, and I've been zipping through those books in two days.

My reading preferences? Quite eclectic, as is my taste in music, film, and podcasts. My addiction to TV programs has (hopefully!) been cured, as I've spent most of the last year in Rome and traveling in Europe. I am back in the U.S. for the summer and am playing catch up on a few of my favorite TV shows---still dying to get "Lost!!---but trying not to be sucked back into the idiot box.

I've really been enjoying the discussions in this group (my first on GoodReads.com) and thank you for all of the great suggestions on reading material!

Mary | 3 comments Thanks Rick for the invitation. I've always loved James Mason, but had mostly forgotten about him, so was intrigued by the name of the group. I am an avid reader--can't go anywhere without reading material. Also love British literature, but the authors/names of some of the more recent ones are escaping me right now. I'll have to come back to it!

Leslie (lesliehealey) HI, I'm Leslie. I teach British Lit and World Lit to high school juniors and seniors. I READ EVERYTHING, so the eclectic nature of this group really appeals to me. This year, I invited my seniors to join goodreads, so now I have an entirely new list of books to read. Right now, I am reading Let the Great World Spin, Outliers, Heart Shaped Box, Paddy Clarke hahaha, Just Kids and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo all at once. I also love YA fiction: Leviathan is on my iPhone right now. Gotta read all I can in the summer: back to Macbeth and magic realism in the fall. Thanks for inviting me.

K.D. wrote: "The Panamanian Princess"

K.D.- The Panamanian Princess seems like a very facinating book! curious to see how you findit after finishing the book!

At the turn of the 20th century, Panama is fighting for its separation from Colombian rule. The President of Panama calls upon an American Hero, a Rough Rider for help. President Teddy Roosevelt sends his friend to Panama, a man who falls in love with a Princess. "Who is this man from America; what does he want of us; what does he want of me? I no meet with this - this American," the princess says in her thick Spanish accent. "I am with family." The president surveys the damage, the dead, and the injured in the corridor, and he listens to the voice of this American, the voice of a new friend, a voice of hope - a voice that just might be too late to save him or the princess.

Petra Hi. My name is Petra and I just joined this Group because Rick invited me (thanks, Rick).
I've been lurking for a few weeks. I haven't heard of James Mason and wasn't sure how much I could contribute to a group dedicated to him.
However, I find there's a wide variety of topics here that I could participate in. (I'll also have to check out James Mason, won't I?).

I'm looking forward to being a member of this Group and getting to know you all.

message 728: by Gini (new)

Gini | 106 comments Hello, I'm a long-time lover of Brit Lit, starting with Jane Eyre when I was in junior high school. I love Austen, particularly P&P, and have an appalling addiction to books written about Lizzy and Darcy's life - most of them are ghastly, and I swear off of them for a while, but then I fall back into their grasp.

I am currently on a Thomas Hardy kick, having started with Return of the Native and then Far from the Madding Crowd. I'm now reading The Mayor of Casterbridge. I honestly can't say whether I like Hardy or not, but he does keep drawing me back in.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on books!

welcome Jerome!!!
Great question! mind if I answer it in the reverse- because one required book stands out as being the most boring book I ever read and had to do a report on-
Nabakov's memoir- Speak/Memory - reading it was like being locked in a padded cell forced to listen to nonstop Barry Manilow records - writing a report on it was like drinking a keg of castor oil!!

message 731: by Eden (new)

Eden Winters (edenwinters) Rick, thanks for the invitation! As a lifelong reader and recent author, I couldn't pass up a chance to connect with others who share my passions. There are so many great British writers, but the one dearest to my heart is Charles Dickens. The holidays just wouldn't be the same without A Christmas Carol. Sadly, I haven't read many of the others mentioned here since high school. I guess I need to remedy that. Their influence in my life remains even if my own writing is different. (Very, very different.)

Sarah Crisan (sprinkles4cookies) Hey guys!!!
I'm an average teen in the good U.S of A. In my free time I like to write, read, cheer, play piano or trumpet, paint, draw, talk to old friends, and make new friends, ski, act, and many more. When I can, I enjoy meeting my role models in the author community. I treasure the advice they give me, and the inspiration. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be in the process of my first book.
Smiley faces and Thumbs Up.

message 735: by David (new)

David (david_greene) Hello James Masoners. My novel
href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/85... is an epic story of two pairs of lovers in the Civil War south. One couple is straight, white and wealthy. The other couple is gay, black and enslaved. The book is written in the style of a 19th century novel. My hope is that those of you who enjoy Anthony Trollope, in particular, will find this novel agreeable. The paperback is 561 pages—a good long read—for those who wish to be immersed in a story that takes place before and during the Civil War.

Kindle users: Here is a

A Paperback edition is also available.

If anyone would like to read a sample in the browser, you can do so here.

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments 'scuse me butting in, but on the subject of books from school days, I've still got the 'famous five' books in hard back in my book case. The one book from school however which still sticks in my mind 50 years on, is 'Lorna Doone' by R.D. Blackmore, for me to remember it so vividly so long after reading it, it just has to be one of the all time greats. I still have a hard back of that too, must find time to read it again!.
