Melanie | 15 comments Thanks for the invite, Rick.

I read a little bit of everything and right now getting ready to conquer some of what I've acquired at library book sales. I need to reduce. I'm looking forward to getting more involved.

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments We have recently moved house, down sizing after 25 years, what a nightmare!! I knew I had a lot of books but as many as this!! Among them I have found some real jems, memories of a long, long ago childhood, all the expected titles, man in the iron mask, lorna doone, moby dick and the likes. The ones I remember most were the Enid Blyton famous five books, the Tom Merry books and the real jems 'Jennings and Darbyshire' series. Only now do I apprieciate what it must have cost Mum and Dad to buy these for me, all hard backs, Dad worked on a farm, the same farm all his life, so there is no way it would have been easy to have found the money, thanks Dad. There is no way I could part with them, even though my grand kids will never read them. I suppose it could have been my early love of books which inspired me to take up writing. Check out my current triller 'The Day the Ravens Died', I write under the name Timothy Pilgrim, although my new book, due out in a couple of weeks is under my own name. This is a gardening book [Beyond the Potting Shed:] aimed at the 'newbie' grow your own brigade, to help avoid spending a fortune but still get decent vegies.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer:]

Take care :)

Victoria Dixon (ronempressblogspotcom) | 2 comments Oh, I'm sorry to hear this! One of the best audio books I've ever heard was Neil Gaiman's "Anansi Boys." The book is marvelous anyway, but the guy who reads is positively brings it ALIVE. I went out and bought the audio book separately from my hard back copy it was that good. It will also make you laugh, which is great medicine. Hope you start feeling better!

I love this! I love reading steerage books! It's like in the movie Titanic, where the rich people are having a stuffy dinner party upstairs, but in steerage they are drinking and dancing. I know where I would rather be :)

Evelina A. (amerigo) Hi, everyone. My name is Evelina, and I send my thanks to Rick for inviting me to join this vibrant and eclectic group of readers.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) Hello! My name is Lianne. I'm Canadian. I read mostly fantasy, along with some sci-fi and young adult fiction, and the occasional "general fiction" book. Unfortunately it takes me quite a while to read a book because my reading speed is fairly slow I think (if I read faster I don't remember stuff), and also I'm a university student with an all-around busy life. However, I graduate in December, so after that I'll at least be a little less busy!

message 677: by Douglas (new)

Douglas (dougkotti) | 2 comments Hello, all. My name is Douglas and I reside in Columbia, South Carolina, USA.

Rick, thank you for inviting me to join this extraordinary group. I feel privileged that you asked me to join; I am in awe of the many authors from around the world who are members. James Mason Classic British Group --- what a clever concept! To many Americans, James Mason emblemized all of the sophistication, education, good manners, and accomplished civilization that is Great Britain.

I am not a published author, but write extensively as a practicing attorney. Clearly, being exposed to the talent and interests of the Group's members will enrich my own reading and learning, and for that I am most thankful.

With great expectations, I thank Rick again for asking me to join the James Mason Group.

I initially started the Group as a memorial tribute to my favorite actor- James Mason- who is all that you have said!

message 679: by Evan (new)

Evan Fraser | 3 comments Rick, good question re why I co-write.

Andrew is a very old friend from high school so when we teamed up for our first book it just seemed like a fun project. But Andrew is not only a wonderful friend but a brilliant writer (where my prose tends to be pretty boring and academic no matter how hard I try) so our skills complement each other very nicely. In addition, the process of negotiating with publishers and agents, doing promotions work, and developing book proposals is enormously complicated so working in a team really helps share the burden (especially since both of us have young families and day jobs).

message 680: by Jan (new)

Jan (booklover777) | 24 comments Hi All - I'm Jan. Thanks, Rick, for inviting me.
Some of my favourite authors since teenagehood (which was a long time ago!) have been British writers, specifically the mystery writers from the 'Golden Age' - Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, etc. I also like some of the more modern British mystery ladies like Ruth Rendell, Minette Walters, P.D. James. My book club's name is Eclectica, which explains my current taste in books. I'll read just about anything! I'm looking forward to getting more reading ideas from this group!

Leslie Shimotakahara (lshimo) Rick, thanks for the invitation! I am writer and "recovering academic" (ex lit prof). My blog "The Reading List" focuses on the novels that have uplifted and inspired me at crisis points in my life. As you read about my turbulent exit from academia and journey toward happiness, I hope you will share your favourite novels and how they have helped you deal with the emotional highs and lows of life. Read about my journey at www.the-reading-list.com

A couple of my favourite British authors are Virginia Woolf and Graham Greene.

Thanks!

message 685: by Aaron (new)

Aaron P. | 2 comments hello

new to the group... I am a writer ; mostly of poetry, sometimes other things - and a reader of just about everything. I feel like my love of reading comes from my curiosity in general, to learn and wonder about the world, people, places, and what is possible or impossible. stretching my imagination is important to me I would say that is what draws me to fantasy and sci-fi, which may be the closest I have to a preferred genre - though I I'll read just about anything that catches my mind's eye. since this is a British group, I would add that Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin, and Anthony Burgess are three of my favorite British writers.

WELCOME ALL NEW MEMBERS!!

Paul- how was Mr Pratchett? I recall reading that there were some health issues- I hope he is doing well.

message 693: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi Rick,
he is a terrific speaker, even better than his writing! He came to see me because he was interested in the way my books are published,I think. As for his health, he says he can't remember the last book he read, but swears it has nothing to do with his altzimers, but because it was so long ago he last read a book. I think he was being polite about me offering him one of mine!
He did seem in fine form though, a touch frail perhaps but then he is not a young man and it was very hot [by U.K standards:] As an individual, he had won me over, he comes across as a genuinely nice guy.
I consider myself privileged to have talked to him.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer:]

Cliff Scovell (CMScovell) | 5 comments Hi, my name is Cliff Scovell.

In my day job, I work as a unexciting freelance computer support consultant for small businesses in the western USA. At night, I'm an unknown novelist. My first published novel, a science fiction/adventure came out early this year, and recently won the finalist position in the 2010 Next Generation Indie Awards. (Sorry for the bit of bragging. That part of my novelist career was definitely not unexciting.)

I'm currently reading Satan's Chamber, a fast-paced spy novel that's a bit grittier than James Bond, but still full of action.

I'd like to tell you what I do in my spare time, but I have none. Anybody got some to spare. I could use five or ten more hours in each day.

Linda Hi there, I was just invited by Rick to be his friend and to join this club, which I didn't know about. I am currently following the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list & Group. This group looks like it will be a good complement.
I have a BA in English and LOVE British Lit. in fact, will be teaching a HS BL course next year for a homeschool program. Over the summer I am adding to my "repetoire" of books I've read, since I try not to recommend books I haven't read myself. Just finished A Room with a View; currently reading Gulliver's Travels and Dracula.
