Hi there! It's great to be among book lovers. I am a French fiction writer based in Cambridge and I am passionate about books and writing. I have started my 6th novel and planning on selling the 5th one as an ebook both in French and English. And I work part-time so things are quite hectic at the moment! Still, I am looking forward to 'chatting' with you all...

He's the hero of my novel Peter Cooper and the Pirate King which tells the story of his run-in with a foul fellow named Bill Kyuper. Bill, aka The Pirate King, has a problem in that he is dying and in order to rejuvinate his sorry self he has designs on Peter's youthful and energetic soul. In spite of that, however, it is a quite cheerful and funny story full of silly moments as well as magical ones. I invite you to visit my website www.petercooperandthepirateking.com as well as my blog jamesdeacutis.wordpress.com where I post many of my short gothic horror and sci-fi tales. Pleased to meet you all...

My name is Jo Anne Benware and I an a avid reader and in the middle of writing my first novel.
My only problem is writing the descriptive narrative. Its bogging me down. Any suggestions would be most helpful. I am also an awful speller and thank the person who invented spell check.
I am in NC and belong to the RWA and to the Charlotte chapter. We meet once a month and do workshops, have editors and agents visit. Its great. No matter what you write it helps to belong to get feed back and help.

Emma Ibegbulem | 1 comments Hi everyone, and Rick, thanks for the invitation. I'm a writer and I've just published my first book, The Dark Intruder, set in 19th century Italy, where I live today; 21st Century Italy which hasn't changed much.

If you've ever dreamed of experiencing that melancholy feeling at the sound of a steam whistle; if in your heart you long to perceive the pounding of hoofs echo into the night while a coach rattles away from a gentle pool of light, then The Dark Intruder is for you. This romance fiction will take you through perilous journeys, land you right in the middle of 19th century social upheavals, and then you will be whisked away by the Dark stranger, Enrico Maria DeMartis...

THE DARK INTRUDER evokes love in all its varieties of overwhelming emotions, the complications of all its various implications indited by the “Unknown,” gripping the mind and firing the imagination to work upon it as it commands. It speaks passion deeply rooted in time, commanding an era marked by revolutions, plots, treachery and threat, and even so, this love, upon which the story weave lies, inextricably meshes into the nineteenth-century tangles of what may be referred to as the Italian version of the Victorian era.
The nineteenth century, with its scores of enchanting historical events and personalities that marked Italy, acts as a plain white canvas on which all the possible colours in the romantic colour wheel could come to life, and together they fulfill the word, the word of passion. It is an era when romance was at its highest, when love was true, and true love could be shared after having conquered thousands of obstacles. A lot about the period is romantic; there was time, there was poetry, there was nature, there was sorrow, there was pain. . . and all these set the scene for the perfect romance.”

And this kept the flame of passion burning in Victoria. The Dark Intruder recounts Victoria Villanova’s intriguing encounter with the dark stranger, Enrico Maria DeMartis, the Dark Minister of Love. It bears the message that a stranger could come into your life and steal your heart away.

If you have experienced the above-mentioned emotions at least once in your life, then these links are yours to follow:

Larry Winebrenner (wmyrral) | 45 comments Larry Winebrenner here answering a plea on Feb 25 by Jo Anne Benware who said "I an a avid reader and in the middle of writing my first novel. My only problem is writing the descriptive narrative . . . ."

I don't have an entire lesson for you, Jo Anne, but one tip. Action beats description almost every time. Instead of saying, "There were low-hanging branches," say, "She rubbed the sore spot on her head. It had bumped that miserable low-hanging branch. There was a slight slipperiness of blood under her palm. She wouldn't make that mistake again."

While 30 words replace 4 words, here, you achieve more than description. You get pain---and if you're my wife---fear at the presence of blood. The reader sees those other low-hanging branches and inwardly begs her not to make that mistake again. Some readers will worry about a visible scar, or at least a temporary scab, marring her beauty. Some may even wonder if this will lead to infection, complicating her determination to win her man. You don't get only low-hanging branches. You get reader participation.

"A kiss is just a kiss . . ." or however that oldie goldie goes---but perhaps that's before the readers's time! :)

Hope this helps.

Next time, I have a question about one of my books.

I love you.

Larry Winebrenner

Don G. (dgford) | 16 comments Saturday I reached a new milestone as my newest book
"Connect the Dots" hit the market. It is a collection of short stories, some of which have been seen in magazine articles or in other book clubs in Europe.

Interestingly enough, the sold tales went for anywhere from $125 to $250 per story and are collected here for your pleasure. Read them at bedtime or anytime during the day. These are for any age from youth to the most mature of readers.

I'm a Native American Storyteller so I guess the writing is in the blood or maybe there was something in the water that inspired much of my work. See my new book >> https://www.createspace.com/4178281

Thank you for the link, Don, I didn't know about this site. I have pet rats and always include them, + a dog and/or cat in my novels. I believe that characters who have animals are far more rounded and interesting and am puzzled as to why so many authors don't give their characters a pet in books which depict families and kids. Of course, it goes without saying that I can't stand to read an animal killed or abused in books and cringe when that comes up. Even though it is fiction, I know it is all too close to the bone.

My short stories on Amazon are The Cloud, Christmas With Snoz and The Metamorphosis of Troubadour Merriwether - all (hopefully) humorous and one romantic!

Carmel Audsley (httpwwwoursyoursandmineswebscom) | 10 comments Thanks for the invitation to join, Rick. I've worked as a journalist, editor and publicist for many years and my debut historical fiction novel 'Ours, Yours and Mines' was published last July. It is set in the late 1800s/early 1900s in the miners' rows of Scotland and follows a family as they struggle poverty, disease and death. The people, places and events are real. It is based on my great-great-grandmother who gave birth to eight children and buried seven of them. Sadly, it is typical of the times and an accurate portrayal of life at that time. Even though the story has brought readers to tears,it would be a good Mother's Day gift (or Mothering Sunday in the UK). It does us all good to have a little weep occasionally. First link is for US readers and second link for UK readers. I would be very happy to get your feedback about the novel and to answer readers' questions. Available in hardback and kindle.

Cairn Rodrigues (CairnRodrigues) | 1 comments Hello, I love James Mason so could not resist a group named for him. My name is Cairn and I'm fairly new to Goodreads. Once upon a time I was a chef, but have turned to writing with an epic fantasy series. I did post the first chapter of the first book, The Last Prospector, on this site and invite you all to have a look. Because writing a multi-part book series is not enough writing, I also author two blogs about being a neophyte author and being a seasoned chef.

I have such a varied range of interests that I won't bore anyone with a list, life is just endlessly fascinating to me and there isn't enough time to take it all in.

I'm very particular these days about which books I will invest in, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo left me emotionally scarred in a lasting way. But there are many good books out there and I wait for the ones vetted by my friends. It's the same with movies too, once I realized that the dog in I Am Legend was going to die, I ran as fast as I could from that movie.

Wow, I'm not sure if that was too much for a first date or not.

Gerald Simpkins | 2 comments Hello everyone. Iam glad to be a member of this group and I would like to thank Rick Friedman for that opportunity.

I do happen to sgree with Rick that James Mason was one of the greats on the silver screen, and his talent only grew over the years.

I have once again taken up my love of good novels. It is almost like returning to an old love who knows you only too well. But then something happened to me as I again took up reading strictly for entertainment. I got the bug to write. How does that happen?

In my case it was just that I thought that a genre I was then reading could have more action, adventure and romance and could be far less depressing and could do without some well-worn cliche characteristics.

I recently finished my first novel 'Forever Young The Beginning'. Of all things, it is a vampire story, set in 18th century Europe. It is a really different take on that genre, appealing far more to adults than to teenagers, which is unusual in vampire literature.
Forever Young The Beginning

I wrote a sequel to it that takes place in America during the Revolutionary War.
Forever Young Birth Of A Nation

Finally I wrote one with some of the characters of the original book that is set in America in year 2000.Forever Young Irina

Who would have guessed that a guy my age would take up writing, and about vampires no less? In my books they could be your next door neighbors or maybe your employer. Some of you might even have a boss like that!

Gerry

Most of my stories sent to floydthedog were fiction, but if a true story is of interest to the publisher, it may get published. I had the fortunate distinction of meeting this publisher from Portugal as he flew in from there to Syracuse to meet with me last Easter, 2012.

Will Lutwick (will_lutwick) | 1 comments Hi group - Rick F, the group's founder, has encouraged me via LinkedIn to join and "post all info and and links for your book."

I'm the author of a recently released, award-winning, critically acclaimed sericomic memoir, Dodging Machetes.

In its central plot, a quirky Peace Corps Volunteer falls for a beautiful, rebellious, but off-limits Indian girl in Fiji. When their liaison is outed, a community firestorm erupts and violence ensues. Will the besieged lovers stay together, or will a hostile world tear them apart? Romeo and Juliet meets Eat, Pray, Love in this account of two star-crossed lovers in a tropical paradise.

The book has achieved the following in its first nine months:
• "Dodging Machetes" won the 2012 USA Best Book Award for Mulitcultural Non-Fiction. (It is also in the running for other awards that have not yet been announced; the book is still early in its awards period.)
• The professional critics have unanimously raved about "Dodging Machetes":
"In his beautifully written memoir...he relays these memories with neither bitterness nor self-serving pity--just a good dose of humor and intelligence...He shares thoughtful insight into Fiji's exotic history and society...Off-the-charts hysterical. An unabashed, candid memoir that continually entertains and educates."
--KIRKUS REVIEWS

"An eye-opening story about love, loss, and discrimination...Not only is this an exciting memoir, but it's a great modern day Romeo and Juliet tale. You can tell that this book was a passionate labor of love. Each page is as addicting as the last, with great emotional elements driving the story. This is a great book for those looking for a well-rounded love story with a few laughs and a lot of heart." Five Stars.
--SAN FRANCISCO BOOK REVIEW

"Lutwick's memoir is a fun romp through the tropics, featuring forbidden love and outrageous cross-cultural miscommunications. Part 'South Pacific' and part adventure comedy, Lutwick's book is all heart. I cheered for him every step of the way."
--JULIA SCHEERES, Award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of "Jesus Land" and "A Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Hope, Deception, and Survival at Jonestown"

"...entertaining and thought provoking...This is a fine example of what a memoir can be...episodic, fast paced chapters. Once I started, I could not stop and yet, found myself thinking about his story and its themes long after the highlighted passages began to fade. If you enjoy a roller-coaster memoir, you'll love Dodging Machetes. It will probably win awards. Five stars."
--PEACE CORPS WORLDWIDE by LAWRENCE F. LIHOSIT, author of the bible on Peace Corps memoirs, "Peace Corps Experience: Write and Publish Your Memoir"

"Much delight I have in this author. You do a great job of seamlessly weaving the back story and the main plot. You are so vivid with your words. It's light-hearted and educational at the same time. It's movie-friendly. Dodging Machetes kept me from beginning to end."
--STARLA FAYE, host of "Two Talk Books" on LA Talk Radio in her interview with Will Lutwick

“The beauty of 'Dodging Machetes' is not just that Lutwick tells the story of his experience with literally laugh-out-loud humor, depth, insight and candor, but that he does so with such honesty, transparency and…self-reflection…You can rest assured that it won’t take long to read this book since you won’t be able to put it down."

Betsy Ashton | 1 comments Thanks to Rick for the invitation. I'm a life-long reader (since I was three) and a newly published writer. My first book, Mad Max Unintended Consequences, is the story of a grandmother who finds herself raising her grandchildren long after she thought she had finished child-rearing. Conflicts ensue.

As a reader, I love mysteries, thrillers, suspense and an occasional police procedural. I love dark tales, so I'm drawn the those from Norway, Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. Can't get into Westerns or romance, not for lack of trying.
