Thank you, Rick, for inviting me to join the group! It looks like a great forum. My name is Chris Narozny and my first novel (JONAH MAN) just published this month. You can find out more about it/me at christophernarozny.com. Thanks again!
Hi Everyone,I, too, am a writer. My third book, DAWN'S END OUTWORLD APOCALYPSE will be published this month, finishing off a New Adult trilogy. I have also self published two short story collections of pieces now out of print and some contest winners - BOUQUET and INHALE. Most of my work has a speculative element. They are available on Amazon.
I'm also an avid reader, a book or two a week on average. My latest read was The Night Circus, which I enjoyed but had to push myself to read in the middle. I was a little surprised by the testimonials which may have hyped it too much and built up my expectations. Now, I'm reading PURE a post-apocalyptic YA novel which manages to be inventive yet believeable.
Because of this, and other demands on my time, I don't post often but I do check out what other people are reading.
Alex wrote: "Welcome to new members. You can't beat the James Mason groups."Are you suggesting I quit trying?
I'm a writer from California (and very serious motion picture fan) who has two big regrets regarding the great James Mason:1. That he's not alive so that I can't send him a signed copy of my Port Royal and hope that he might read it.
2. That (with all due respect to Richard Burton's great performance) he did not get the movie role of George in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" -- as Edward Albee wished. This could have surpassed everything he did, including Lolita and A Star is Born.

Wow, Robert...he would have been amazing in that role. I love that movie and have seen it on stage a few times (most recently with Kathleen Turner). Mason would have been extrodinary and had a way of bringing out the very best in his female co-stars.

Rick, I wanted to report I haven't left the group. I have been inactive for abt. 10 days due to an on going illness. I am up & trying to get caught up w/ everyone. I will be slow for a while, I have miss my James Mason friends. susie

Mason would have been extrodinary and had a way of bringing out the very best in his female co-stars.Yeah, Bart, this was a very big deal at the time. Jack Warner was still alive and in charge of this decision for the studio. Albee wanted James Mason and Bette Davis. (As you know the play, you can understand how big the Bette Davis casting would have been. Bette opening with "What a dump!") But this was precisely the moment when Elizabeth Taylor was at her peak and she was determined to show what kind of an actress she was, stripped of most of her natural assets. Once they decided on Liz in lieu of Bette, it followed that Burton (her husband at that time) would be perfect for marketing this very high-profile picture. Warner was worried that people would reject it as too high-brow or avant-gard, and was determined to make it star-driven. As it turned out, Burton won an Academy Award for the part (he really was fantastic) and James Mason later acknowledged that Burton had been great in the role.
Another big competitor for the George part was Henry Fonda. This would certainly have been a big deal, and I think that he was Bette Davis' personal choice for the role. Fonda could be the best at playing embittered men. Burton made him a poet. Mason would have played him straight up, as a failed intellectual.

I think that's a great analysis of how those three actors would have interpreted the role. Oh...I see Alex just said the same thing. (Great minds think alike.)

Thanks for the invite, Rick. I'm looking forward to chatting with others about the books they love, or don't, and why. I've been writing a long time, have over 40 novels published. Work in progress? A historical thriller based on the life of Princess Louise, one of Queen Victoria's daughters--The Wild Princess--should be out August 1. I also do editing/mentoring for other fiction writers, teach in DC at The Writer's Center, and review for the Historical Novel Society. When I have time, I pet the cats, feed my fish, garden and do a little fun reading. Great to be with you! Kathryn Johnson (aka Mary Hart Perry)

Many thanks to Rick for the invitation... most thoughtful.I love to read --99.99% fiction versus non-fiction-- and, out of respect for my fellow authors, always finish a book once I start it, even if it's not my cup of tea.
Nice to be here!

I'm having the bookiest week of my life! My novel THE SECRETS OF MARY BOWSER was published on Tuesday. Sold out at my first bookstore reading at the legendary Powell's City of Books on Friday. So regrets it's taken so long to to accept Rick's lovely invitation to join this community. The main character in my book is based on a real person who changed the course of history because she could read. How's that for an affirmation that our love of books is powerful?
Just curious. James Mason has 5855 members. I could only find one larger (searched for vampires).Yowza Yowza Yowza. Good on us.
