A boy lives on a fragment of earth where the majority of the people are illiterate and are unaware of books even existing. The people are divided into social classes where there are very few rich. The boy enters one of their homes and discovers a book and a friend. He is then taught to read and write. He later discovers that the world they live in is there because of a scientist(possibly his father). It was preserved and the old earth was destroyed due to extreme pollution.I believe there's also a sequel.
