Nick (nickqueen) | 20 comments Granted I haven't yet started reading the book (coming next week!) I will start a discussion for those who are finished and then run into a corner and ignore it till I'm done!

Which character do you like the most and why? The least and why?

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) P.S. Edit: My very favorite characters were Hans & Death.

---

I love LIesel because of her love of learning, her willingness to keep secrets, and I just identified with some of her pain.

I especially love Hans for his incredibly nurturing nature.

I love Rosa for the changes she makes and also for the way she was all the time but I appreciated her more as the book went on.

I love Rudy for the changes he made and also his loyalty and friendship.

I like Max for the books and also his concern for others, even when he was the most vulnerable among them.

And I really, really liked Death. The book just wouldn’t have been as compelling without Death.

Also, the mayor’s wife (I’ve already forgotten her name) came through, didn’t she?

One of the reasons I thought the book was wonderful is that there are so many interesting characters.

Angie Fisher | 2 comments Death...as the ultimate antagonist(but not?) who one can't help but grow to love for his undying humanity, which seems to be such an incredible oxymoron?

Lisa | 18 comments My favorite character would be hard to decide upon because there were so many strong and loveable ones. Rosa eventhough she was gruff was in her own way loveable. My favorite would have to be Hans though. Hans was the strength yet gentleness that Leisel needed in her life. From the very start Death lets you know that Hans is not just any average man. When Death introduces him you know he will be something special. (I wish I had a quote here, but I read this book about 6 months ago and returned it to the library.) Anyway, I think that any German man at that time in history who can stand up and do what is right is someone to be admired. He also has the greatest impact on Leisel because he was the one who taught her to read thus giving her the power of words, the ability to use the books that she stole for a greater purpose.
As for the character that I hated the most I have to say (and I can't remember his name) the boy who took over the stealing operation that a few of the kids had going. He was mean and dictorial, almost like the kids own little version of Hitler himself.

My favorite character is Death. I like how he does his job but doesn't like it. I also liked Max. My least favorite character is Micheal the neighbor's son. It wasn't so much the character but his story. I am sad for him, so he ended up being my least favorite.
