2. First con then pro. (After my imagination kicked in)
3. I think he's from Charlie's world.
4. After a lot of sugar and cream..yep.
5. Always. Better to do something than nothing.

2. Pro Swopes
3. I think he lived in that apt. before she came.
4. I used to drink 2 full pots of coffee a day. Now I'm a tea drinker and Ritalin addict.
5. Yes, but that's a hard call.

2. (reader's mind) eye candy... never too many of those!
3. I seriously thought Mr. Wong to be some deity at first, but with all of the speculation and wondering - I just want to be surprised. :D
4. Cocoa person here, but I sincerely act the same way as any coffee addict. I. Need. To. Have. My. Cocoa. Daily (or more...).
5. Charley is very brave and whether she should or shouldn't get involved - she would do it in any way. As we get to know her through reading, we can see she would do anything for her friends and anyone that asks her for help. She is awesome like that.

2. I was con in the beginning. But let's just say that Garrett Swopes grew on me and now I'm all Team Garrett .
3. I think Mr. Wong is from another universe sent to help Charley.
4. I don't like coffee, only drink tea when sick, hate chocolate. I know I'm so un-American. LOL.
5. I don't think Charley should've gotten so involved with her client that she put her own life in danger and was beaten for it. But Charley's impulsiveness is what I adore the most about her. She reacts first and think about the consequences later. She has a big heart and truly cares for her clients and will go to the extreme for the ones she loves.

2. Pro swopes as a friend, but it's been touch and go
3. I try not to think about why Mr Wong is there as I know Darynda will have something awesome in mind
4. I don't like coffee at all, but I have a caffeine addiction through chocolate
5. I think it's good that someone is willing to get involved in domestic abuse cases to that degree but there may have been a better way. however, she also wouldn't be Charlie if she didn't do things impulsively and not think them through properly

HAHAHA! You will definitely find out in Eighth! :)
HAHAHA! You will definitely find out in Eighth! :)

2. Pro Garrett
3. I've thought Mr. Wong was some kind of guardian sent by her real parents to watch over Charlie but had to reconsider. If he's there to protect her he's really slacking on the job lol. Although considering how impulsive Charlie is, no one person or being could protect her all the time. But that's part of why I we love her. Anyway can't wait to find out more about Mr. Wong.
4. I have to have my coffee every morn first thing but after a pot I'm done for the day.
5. I'm glad she got involved. But she really needs to think things through a little more before she acts.

Pd: I can bet that Mr.Wong is definitely a ghost of war.

2. Not a big fan of Swopes, but he IS useful. I like the way Charlie is in charge (referencing later books here). NIN-Came Back Haunted...
3. Mr. Wong is a surrogate protective ninja (LOL) for pending arrival (again, referencing later books).
4. Don't want to live in a world without coffee. Kindred spirit. *takes slurp & exhales a contented sigh*
5. Charlie wasn't ready for the abuse case yet.

1) lederhosen... Not for me
2) no fan but no hater
3) no clue but I would like to see him more
4) no coffee or tea for me. I am all for hot chocolate!
5) no, it would have been too much

1 bondage
2 con Swopes but like him in later books
3 A ghost of mystery I have no idea
4 Love the smell of coffee but rarely drink it
5 Someone should have helped. but not Charley!

so glad I stopped in to see this little trinket ... Mr. Wong ... we get to find out ... woo hoo!

Chapter 1 opens with Charley being woken up at the crack of dawn by her uncle, and called down to a crime scene. She awakens to a ghost (well, two ghosts if you count Mr. Wong) in her apartment and a coffee machine that won't brew fast enough. The ghost, Patrick Sussman, was killed the night before by two gunshot wounds to the head. He was told that Charley could help find his murderer... but Charley isn't really in the mood. She's sore from a violent encounter she had the night before with the abusive husband of a private client, and she's still busy fantasizing about the mystery man from her dreams who calls her "Dutch."
Down at the crime scene, we meet Uncle Bob (also known as Ubie), detective, and Garrett Swopes, pain-in-the-ass skiptracer. Garrett and Charley were friendly until Uncle Bob had a little too much to drink and told Garrett that Charley was the Grim Reaper. Needless to say, Garrett is having a little trouble with the concept.
The body at the crime scene belongs to Jason Barber, a colleague of Sussman's, along with Elizabeth Ellery, who also shows up at the scene. The three of them make up the law firm Sussman, Ellery, & Barber, and all three were killed the night before by two gunshot wounds to the head. Charley and Swopes leave to go find Elizabeth's body, which is outside of her sister's house.
On the way, we get the backstory of Charley's beating from the night before. She was helping an abused wife run away to Mexico City to live with her aunt by keeping her husband distracted. She met him at a bar and goaded him into hitting her so he'd spend the night in jail while his wife flew out of the country.
Once they arrive at Elizabeth's sister's house, they find Elizabeth's body. Charley goes to sit off to the side and starts seeing dark blurs in the periphery of her vision, and we're introduced to the Big Bad.
The Big Bad has shown up in Charley's life at key moments: when she was born, when she was discovering her role to play as Grim Reaper, and when her life was in danger. In fact, he's saved her life on several occasions -- each time by severing her attacker's spinal cord in half without leaving a mark. According to Charley, "he was basically dark and creepy and just sort of showed up in my life every so often to impart some juicy tidbit of afterlife wisdom... he was dark and dangerous, and death seemed to waft off him like smoke off dry ice."
After Charley breaks the bad news to Elizabeth's sister, she rides home with an officer who is being followed around by an evil, blonde, little girl ghost. (Never a dull moment for Charley!) We close with Charley heading home for a bite to eat with plans to meet her uncle to talk about the murder cases later.
Extra points for discussion:
1. How do you think lederhosen were involved in Charley's sexy dream? I'm dying to know.
2. Are you pro or con Garrett Swopes?
3. Where do you think Mr. Wong came from?
4. Do you love coffee as much as Charley? I do. Her coffee addiction speaks to me on a spiritual level.
5. Do you think Charley should have gotten involved in her domestic abuse case? Why or why not?
