message 531: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments LOL, I did think that was sad. Though I hated that the Charles got to keep that magnificint animal!

In the same vein, what is the name of the Mule on the ridge?

message 541: by Teresita (new)

Teresita A | 531 comments CORRECT! Way to go...your turn

message 542: by Jen (at last!) (last edited Dec 22, 2011 10:40AM) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Oh my gosh, sorry guys! I totally forgot it was my turn for a question! I've been slammed at work and after work stuff getting ready for the holidays!

Here goes my question:

What is the significance of Joe Abernathy's last name in the Outlander canon? Also, what is the significance of Joe's son, Lenny, assuming the name Ishmael?

message 543: by Catherine (last edited Dec 22, 2011 11:44AM) (new)

Catherine | 288 comments well..Joe's son took the name Ishamel back from his heritage...I think...he felt an outcast...

I think Joe Abernathy is related to Geillis...through marriage...somewhere...when she was living in the Caribbean? I think...I hope!

message 544: by Teresita (last edited Dec 22, 2011 11:39AM) (new)

Teresita A | 531 comments So if Joe is related somehow to Geillis than he is related to Roger too...hmmmm

message 545: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 288 comments I just want to know if I'm anywhere in the neighbourhood of correct!
lol

message 546: by Teresita (new)

Teresita A | 531 comments Catherine, your answer makes sense to me..lol

message 547: by Miss Kate (new)

Miss Kate (misskatesays) | 83 comments I don't think that it's ever made clear whether Geillis was related to Joe or not. But she was married to a man named Abernathy, and slaves in those days took the last name of their owners. Doesn't Claire meet a slave (on the plantation) who reminds her of Joe?

message 548: by Teresita (new)

Teresita A | 531 comments yeah I always wondered why Geillis had the last name of Abernathy and there was a man that reminded Claire of Joe. So it would not surprise me if Joe is related to Geillis.

message 549: by Carol L (new)

Carol L | 218 comments didn't the slave say.."they be callin' me Ishmael..."?

message 550: by Sue (new)

Sue Erickson | 673 comments Joe wouldn't have to be related to Geillis if the slaves took their owners names. He was just a off spring of one of the slaves on the plantation. But maybe Claire saving Ishmel is the reason Joe is here in the first place. Just a thought.
