I feel liike her mother set Maddy up to fail in the sense of feeling like experiencing the world a little bit and dying is better than not experiencing it at all. Especially not that she knows Olly. I don't think she should've lied to him about having medicine but also he really wouldn't have taken her anywhere without that.

It's a pretty sweet birthday scene, though the fact that she's all alone with her Mom is pretty unsettling. As someone who grew up pretty introverted I really don't think I'd be able to handle only having my mother and a nurse around at all times - though I suppose if that's how you grew up you wouldn't really be able to miss going outside? This is the first book I've read in a while that involves the main contact (at least so far) between characters being in... well anything but talking face-to-face. So far we have silent parodies of a bundt cake, email, IM...

Grieving is hard, and she just wanted to protect her baby from the rest of the world.
I'm so happy that she'll finally be able do see the world, and be with Olly entirelly, even if it doesn't last forever.
I really liked this book, it took me out of a very long reading slump, and I hope I'll stay out of it from now on. (hide spoiler)]

As someone who has grown up seeing the ocean a minimum of once a year, I can't even imagine Madeline's awe at seeing it for the first time. Reading the description of the ocean from her point of view is pretty incredible.

At this point I'm just waiting for the inevitable. What's she going to be doing when she gets sick? Is it going to come on slowly, or is she just going to suddenly collapse?

Good on her for getting out there and exploring one tiny corner of the world though - at least she'll get to enjoy something new at least once.

A sad but potentially realistic possibility. But hey, everyone is limited with their choices in a partner at least somewhat by their own location. Just because your location is a bit smaller than others, doesn't mean that the way you feel about someone isn't real.

I'm not sure how I feel about the sex scene. I feel as though they're rushing into it - mostly because she's scared she won't get another chance to live once her Mom gets there.
