Finished (view spoiler)[Woah Barlow is Darwin's grand-daughter! That was an interesting discovery! And I can't wait to figure out what's in those eggs! I'm so pleased Barlow didn't figure out that she was a girl, didn't overhead! I want to see Alek's reaction to that though lol.

I'm also really pleased that Volger planned on throwing the gold overboard when he realised that's what was keeping it on the ground. I really thought he was going to be evil and get all greedy and selfish. It's such a turnaround from the start of the book, when I assumed they were kidnapping Alek, rather than saving him. Review: I went into this book basically blind. I tend not to read the blurbs of books due to spoilers, so I just assumed, based on the cover, that it was something to do with machinery or automatons, and I was right on the machinery part. I liked the fact that it was an alternate history, so it contained real events, just with fabricated fantasies throughout. I loved the imagination involved in this, and the little pictures throughout seriously helped with envisioning the creatures! Such a cool idea! I also really enjoyed the multiple POV. It kept my brain happy.
I liked how (view spoiler)[Deryn managed to stay undercover the whole time, which was somehow unbelievable, but anyhow. I also like the way she was so loyal to her ship and her 'beasties', but how she was also loyal to Alek. And I'm also pleased how she wasn't underestimated in this book. Typically, MCs are also underestimated by other characters, only to prove them wrong and get a lot of attention, but she stayed generally passive throughout, doing her duty. I really liked her. I loved those talking messenger lizards :p They were a bit of fun.
When Alek decided (view spoiler)[not to help the Darwinians because of the danger he would put his men in, I really admired that. And then he went and changed his mind anyway. (hide spoiler)] But I love the sense of loyalty in this book. Actually writing this review it's changing my opinion. I'm liking it more. Definitely going to be continuing this series.
