Insight into Totalitarian Regimes

Do you think that the Republic in Legend is an accurate representation of a totalitarian society? Does it provide insight into the lives of people who currently live in such societies?

This isn't really an answer to the question but I remember feeling very upset after reading 1984 in high school. It's view of the future and this one is very disconcerting. I can't imagine living in a society that is so controlled and bleak. There seems to be no hope for the future and I think without that, the human spirit would wither.
