M— | 60 comments Could someone please combine these authors?

E.E. Knight (a Goodreads author)
E. E. Knight (that's E.^E.)

Thanks!

message 2: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Actually, because E.E. is a Goodreads author, they can't be combined. But, I'll change all E. E.'s books to E.E. and then change E. E. into Various.

message 3: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments M, I did that and combined the editions and started to add in series information when needed, but you (or someone) may want to finish adding series information to individual editions.

M— | 60 comments Thanks much, Lisa!

message 5: by Kaethe (new)

Kaethe (kaethedouglas) Can someone please combine these? One by Richard Bach was co-written with his then-wife Leslie Parrish Bach, who is given the sole credit for the uncombined edition of One: A Novel. Thanks.

message 6: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Somebody already got to it, Kaethe.

message 7: by Kaethe (new)

Kaethe (kaethedouglas) Awesome group of librarians, y'all. Thanks!

Done.

Becky Black (beckyblack) | 18 comments Can a more senior and knowledgable librarian than me take a look at P.G. Wodehouse, please? So far I've found 3 separate profiles for him!

http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

I'm a bit wary of trying to fix this, since I haven't combined authors before and I don't want to make a hash of it on such a prominant one!

There's probably more profiles around for him, with an easily misspelled name like that, but those are the three I've found so far. The first in that list is the correct one.

I merged the latter two into the first.

Jenny T | 6 comments I just came across Flesh and Fire by Laura Gilman and Flesh and Fire by Laura Anne Gilman. I believe these two should be merged (since it's the same book), but am a bit unsure how to proceed. Thanks!

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Normally I'd tell you to merge the authors. But since she's a GR author, you can't -- so I did. Now you can combine editions.

message 16: by Ulises (new)

Ulises (ulisesmakana) | 3 comments I'm sorry, I'm a new librarian. I wasn't sure how to merge this two authors:
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

I wasn't very sure whether we need to merge them either, but it would make sense. We're talking about the same person, only that one page is in Japanese and the other one is in English. Thanks!

message 17: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
My suggestion, although this is non-trivial, is to add the English version of the name as the primary author on each of the ones currently listed under the Japanese version, and move that to the second author spot. That would allow for editions to be combined, without losing any of the data or making it hard for people looking for the Japanese name.

message 18: by Ulises (new)

Ulises (ulisesmakana) | 3 comments Thank you, rivka! I'll see if I manage to figure out how to do that =D

The easiest way I've found is to add the new author in the second position, save the book. Then go in and edit again, and use the little arrow to switch the second author to the first position. (Sometimes you have to click it twice.)

The problem is that you have to do it for each book individually . . .

message 20: by Kriptonima (new)

Kriptonima | 1 comments I found two authors whom have double profiles, probably because both of them has hungarian characters in their names, and so one profile is with the correct name, the other is without diacritics.

The first is Sándor Márai:
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

and the second, István Fekete:
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

I'm sill a new librarian and I'm unsure how to merge these profiles.

message 21: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
In both cases I merged the one missing the diacritics into the one with them. Those are the more correct versions of the names.

Hello!

I don't know if this is a combine or a delete...so I'll leave it to a Super to decide (it's a typo in the author's name resulting in two different names for the same author, plus book listings ~ luckily only two in the erroneous entry):

a) The misspelled name here;

b) The correct page here.

Thank you so much!

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Combining authors can be done by any librarian. I took care of this one.

message 24: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) | 65 comments Thanks Rivka...I was just unclear about the deletion aspect.

message 25: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
When you combine two authors, the one that is not kept is deleted by the system.

message 26: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) | 65 comments Doh! Talk about a "duh" moment. Thanks again. :)

Rivka, Kryptonima,

unfortunately it seems that the Marai aliases, with and\or without accents, are still with us. There are lots of editions of the same books with misspelled names of this author. A quick search can give an idea.
Is there a way to do a massive edit?

message 29: by rivka, Former Moderator (last edited Nov 24, 2010 10:43AM) (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Yup. Just do an author merge for each of the incorrect spellings. They'll keep showing up as new editions get imported from Amazon and B&N. Got all the Sándor Márais and István Feketes I could find.

message 30: by Rosenkavalier (new)

Rosenkavalier | 52 comments Ok. Thanks Rivka.

This actually needs to go in the "Goodreads Author profiles needing merging" topic. I've done it for you now.

message 35: by Kaz (new)

Kaz (imuzak12) | 30 comments I hope this is the right place to ask... Is it possible to merge these three authors' as one?

http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

The first one is the one that his name is written in Japanese. The second one and the third was in English, but the second one has his last name (MORIMI) first while the third one has his first name first (TOMIHIKO).

Thanks.

Authors have two profiles when they publish in two languages where one is transliterated. An example of this would be Anton Chekhov, who has a native profile and an English profile. Other language versions will also exist if the author published in that language. The native form of the name should always be placed first, with the transliterated version as a second 'author'.

message 47: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 31414 comments #45 done. As one is in English & the other arabic, we keep both, but I've added authors & put AKA notes.

message 49: by Moris (new)

Moris | 24 comments 48 done. Combined a few books too; someone who speaks Filipino should check non-english titles.
