Idea for Group Reads

As a modly entity in question, I'm fine with this "ladies choice" approach since it'll give me a chance to consider what really appeals to me, what I have time for, such and such - fair, enthusiastic review.
How would this play out? One of us gets a book, reads and encourages others in the group to do the same because we should support our own?
Just feeling out how it's differing from our general recs aroud here ^-^

Well we've all got different taste in book genres so we'll be reading something for everyone. I'm down for a trial run
Hmm. Okay, I play your evil game only because I seemed to make up the rules for it.
Seriously, though, I'll have to see what's hiding on our shelves and hope nobody thinks I'm an ass for prompting them to freebie me in exchange for publicity.
Not to inspire a feeding frenzy but could we have a thread where authors willing to accomodate an inquiring mod could post with the understanding a copy for review could be requested in the unforseen future?

Well we'd have to give fair warning first I would think. Otherwise, a little contradictory to say don't harrass when we harrass...So, a Q & A topic, maybe closed, so the message is clear. A group message, just for good measure. Crack two eggs and beat them senseless. Add a teaspoon of cinnamon for flavor.
How does that sound?
Shari, your choice, completely up to you. For discussions though, some free copies will be needed for other members.
Okay - I'm just making sure there's visibility on this front. I'm honestly about as comfortable randomly requesting a book as I am getting a random request so I don't want to catch anyone angry and unawares :)

Absolutely, Courtney. In fact, I think we should take our time. Continue talking in the meantime, so that as many members as possible get the word out there.1500+ members, man...
Before I forgot (again) one thing that I feel needs to be said. Not every book is going to be suitable for a group giscussion. I can think of tons of books I absolutely loved, but know the most I could say is, omg you have this book. So, not so much recs, just books that would be good for group discussion.
Lily wrote: "Are you kidding me? Shari, that alone would get major participation lol"Lol I didn't think it would be fair to steal the shine with pervy books

Idea:
Mod's Choice Group Reads
Mods who happen to see a book from a member they think would be good for a group read, contacts the author privately and says, hey, I think your book would be good for a group read, would you be willing to give free copies for discussion?
If the author agrees, great! If not, oh well, move on.
Selection will be random and completely up to the mods. Random genres/categories, it can be anything. It can be anytime, but plenty of advanced notice will be given. You won't know when a group read will strike and when it does, a nice surpise. Random seems to work best for this group anyway.
Ways to disqualify:
- Promotions. No need. Just a yes or no. Any promotions, and the author/book will be automatically disqualified.
- Rude, clingy, immature, stalkerish, unprofessional, etc, behavior.
- Begging mods to pick their book. Any harrassment, automatic disqualification. In fact, don't ask at all. Don't even think about it.
Preference will be given to active members. You know, the people we can trust to read group messages and announcement topics. No set amount of comments posted, just somewhat active. Be here, or be square.
Thoughts?
