TSoR: Next month's pick - out of print but on Audible
She seems pretty cool but I personally don't use Audible. So I may not be able to get the book in time. But if others are fine, I say she seems cool in general, and I'd love to read her down the line.
I think regardless of what you choose, people will be find some reason to be annoyed, may as well just do what you like. :)I'm totally cool with it, regardless.
Is it available at Audible? Or, are you saying it's just available in print? I rarely read paper books anymore, so I'd probably skip it.
It really depends on the narrator and/or Library availibilty. Can't say I'm a fan in general, but I'll make due I'm sure.
I really don't do audio. I tried but I can't concentrate on just a voice without my mind wandering and having to rewind every 10 minutes.Edit: Just adding that despite that I'm not going to be annoyed of angry when you do decide to go that route. I got more than enough stuff to read. :)
As Terpkristin said, somebody will be annoyed no matter what you pick so you might as well choose as the spirit moves you.

I have no problem. Hopefully, whatever it is, is available in Australia.
and for anyone who has never tried Audible, many podcasts have codes for a free book.

Good find. Reasonably priced too.
There are also some of her books available as ebooks on iBooks (Apple)

I mostly do ebook, but I also don't do Laser picks, so it won't affect me. If I did want to read it, I'd hope you announce the pick a few weeks early to allow shipping (either buying the book or inter-library loan) so that there'd still be enough time to read it.
I go through audiobooks super slowly, especially in comparison to ebooks. I'd have to pause my slow listen to Firestarter and slightly reorganize my habits. Which is totally doable for a month. In short, I wouldn't mind, as long as it didn't recur too often.
Once we know which title, we should all click the button that tells Amazon to tell the publisher to release it in Kindle form. :)
According to the podcast, it's The Sword of Rhiannon, which I've already ordered a copy of from AbeBooks. There were 1953 Ace books, another publisher in a double book that apparently *wasn't* an Ace double, and I think a third version, all I looked at for around $6 including US shipping.
I unfortunately don't listen to audio books largely because I just don't seem to have the time - I struggle to keep up with just the few podcasts I listen to while commuting. That said, I was able to find used copies of the book fairly readily available online, and I'm sure the same would be true in local used book stores. So selecting The Sword of Rhiannon seems like it won't be a problem.
Another +1 vote here (polls are your friend ...). As others mentioned if you want the print edition - it may be an excuse to peruse the shelves of local second hand bookstores.
Thanks for all the feedback everybody. I'm going to give this thread at least a day before I make the call. I do want to decide by sometime Friday so that people can have time to get the book if it ends up being the pick
Actually ...http://www.baenebooks.com/p-849-sea-k...
(It looks like it's Sword of Rhiannon in eBook format, just under a different title -- the chapter titles, and the opening text, match. You have to order & download direct from the Baen ebooks site, but they support all major formats.)
Sadly looks like my library doesn't have that book. Or the one in the next county.
That's a bummer, because that would be my first choice.

Also, Brackett is wonderful and I'm happy with anything that gets her in front of more contemporary readers.
Posted today, a review of Sea-Kings of Mars (also published under the title Sword of Rhiannon) at http://jamesdavisnicoll.com/review/le... . James Nicoll is doing a series of Leigh Brackett reviews, and it looks like it's the same book Joseph linked to above. So, ebook!
Well if it ever comes up again in the future, add my voice to the "down with reading out of print stuff" camp.
Shoot I meant down as in "duuuuude I am so down to hang" not "DOWN WITH THE TYRANT!" If that wasn't clear.
Yes, I hate the " out of Print " scenario , but oh my gosh, she wrote the screenplay for the Big Sleep with William Faulkner!!, so I will do all things possible to join in. wait I brought a tor double pack for a penny and 3.99 shipping for a grand total of $4 buck so I am in . Plus the second book is a Sprague de Camp Divide And Rule. Giant Rabbits as overlords?!.
I'm all for this pick, since this book has been on my to-read list for awhile (it's considered a classic of the genre). I personally don't use Audible, but thanks to Joseph I just downloaded the ebook! It also appears to be available in many libraries - check worldcat.org to see if it's in your local library.
Speaking of out of print stuff - it might be fun for a future pick to see if there is a work of interest that Singularity & Co Save the SciFi has rescuedand which is available for individual purchase.

Well I was going to be all "You Kids Get off of my Damn Lawn!" and say no...No out of print books for you etc and on but after perusing my underdark library of forgotten tomes it seems I have several of her books sitting there laughing at my ever failing memory.
Weeeelll ... technically, the book is still in print. Paizo Publishing (who publish the RPG "Pathfinder", amongst other things) have an imprint called "Planet Stories", which contains this book:http://paizo.com/products/btpy8xae?Th...
$12.99 ... no free shipping, though.
As a pulp magazine collector, I know of several places online where you can read stories scanned directly from the pulps themselves ... as luck would have it, Thrilling Wonder Stories June 1949 is available:

(original title "Sea-Kings of Mars")

I really miss that Planet Stories imprint -- they released a bunch of great stuff before it was discontinued.
I don't care, especially now that it is available in eBook. I would have either sucked it up and spent forever listening to it (I read much faster that audiobooks run) or I would have skipped it.
Unfortunately, neither version of the title is available in my library system for take-home reading (and I'm from Toronto). I don't have the money to buy books, so I'd have to sit this one out.

What a cool site. Lots of old pulps. Complete with illustrations and ads. Here's the direct link to the PDF of Sea-Kings of Mars (aka The Sword of Rhiannon)

I'm generally happy if I can get ebook or well narrated audiobook. I've found that these days fitting a paperback into my routine means it takes me a long time to get through it and that doesn't work well with the S&L timeline.
I wasn't quite sure what unz.org is, but here's a description.http://www.openculture.com/2012/06/un...
There is quite a lot of material by Leigh Brackett indexed at the site.
http://unz.org/Author/BrackettLeigh/
Only a few of her stories are available to read. Other say "PDF Under Copyright and Unavailable" when you click.
This book isn't just 'out of print' it isn't even available at the excellent Berkeley Public Library. San Francisco Public Library has a copy - but you can't take it out of the library! Similar story at the UC Berkeley library (not that I have a library card there, I just noticed it on WorldCat.) I guess its fragile. And reading a PDF sounds terrible. mobi/epub or gtfo.
I would probably just buy the trade paperback from Paizo if it's the pick.
Edit: ah it's actually available in ebook from Baen? That would be fine. Would want someone to really confirm it's the correct book though. :)
I love a thing that is a book. I also read kindle and other formats, but I love my books. Every visceral aspect of them. So let's just buy up these used copies if we don't have them already in our collection or let's listen to them. I seem to remember, a long time ago, stories being listened to... yes, I think I remember that. Good pick, mighty Laser Caesar.
Speaking of Brackett and PDFs, her script for The Empire Strikes Back has finally, after thirty five years of speculation, leaked online. Turns out she didn't invent, "Luke, I am your father."

But how do you feel about me picking a Leigh Brackett novel for the next pick. It is only unavaialable in ebook. And in print it's only available used though for cheap usually.
I know a lot of you are against that sort of thing. But how many?
