Goodreads is one of the first "social media" sites I was ever allowed to use, and it's become a safe place for me and many of the people I've met there are absolutely wonderful. Talking with lots of people at once is great, but some things are for one-on-one conversations, and who wants to make an entire private group just to talk to that one person? Furthermore, if anyone out there is like me, you probably want to talk to people without sharing your personal information. It's absolutely valid to only want to talk to someone on one site without sharing other social media handles, and that's a little hard to do if there isn't a viable way to speak on the site you met on. Friends will be lost, connections will falter, and the community of Goodreads will suffer for this choice. I really, really don't want Goodreads to have to experience the imminent withdrawal that most members will most likely do once this feature is removed- and trust me on this, people WILL start leaving GR when DMs are removed. There are absolutely ways to make sure that people are being safe with their messages-- encourage reporting, maybe even minor censorship, but removing it entirely will cause GR to suffer as a whole. Why will we suffer? Well, mental health is one reason. I personally have managed to be drawn out of many a depressive episode by a kind soul reaching out to me through DMs, and I know for a fact that many of my friends have experienced the same thing. A private message can help soothe an upset soul without drawing attention to someone and overwhelming them, keeping the situation manageable and actually reducing the amount of drama that GR officials would have to deal with. Safety is another reason. I myself am super appreciative of people who, instead of just sending me a friend request, will reach out through PMs to ask me about myself and if I'm alright with accepting a request. Only being able to friend request someone without giving them any kind of warning can be extremely overwhelming- plus! Without any way to talk to them / get to know them before they can see your GR history and comments, you have no idea whether that person is a safe person to talk to, or whether you even want to interact with them at all. TL,DR: Don't remove DMs. It will suck. Goodreads, you will lose over half of your members. People will suffer. Make the better choice.
