~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ (abbaschild7748) | 23 comments Okay.. I think I know why the site is all of sudden glitching like it is. Last night I began to experience the thing where it tells me I have a msg, but I don't. After I refreshed my screen several times, it finally went away..

But, when I was trying to update threads in my groups, or delete some. It would let me go through the process, then it would kick me out of my account right when I hit save. I would then have to refresh my screen, which then shows I'm actually still logged in, then have to go through the process again of what I was doing, and only then would it save my work..

This apparently is still happening this morning. Cause I've tried to update a review twice and it won't let me. It keeps kicking me out of the platform and not saving my changes.. I'm also now getting glitches with posting status updates and some group posts.

So, I think these glitches and all the others that you have mentioned here is due to the fact that GR has already started the process of trying to block individual DMs..

Think about it.. Anytime you try to change, update, or block the original structure of a website, all other features go wonky for awhile until the change is complete and smoothed out. Same thing happened for several weeks during and after they changed the notifications and how we receive notifications on the platform..

Makes sense that it's them changing things already, because they sent the email out on Tuesday morning. And some people like myself started experiencing these glitches yesterday evening and last night.

Phil Davis (livepauhanacom) | 5 comments I’m having similar problems. There are certain people that DM won’t recognize so I can send a message??? What’s up with that???

message 619: by KarensKael (new)

KarensKael | 8 comments And already the fallout starts. I get wanting to prevent pedos and preds, but there's better ways to go about that than this. I know some people don't use it, but many GR members rely on it because they don't want to post stuff publicly. I've made some wonderful friends here using DMs.

message 621: by Beige (new)

Beige | 20 comments Hey petition folks,

It does appear to be more than DMs they are taking away!

Here is my latest exhange with GR Support:

I wrote:
I've shared your response with other goodreads group members and we are split on what you actually mean by "remaining messages". It's important for us to be 100% clear on what is changing, so let's try this again...

1. Within a group itself in the "messages" & "comments" we type to each other, which are located inside "topics" and "folders" - will we be permitted to post external links and images in those messages?

2. As a group moderator, I understand I will still be able to send a "broadcast to all members" - I assume we will no longer be able to post external links and images in these broadcast messages, is that correct?

GR Support Responded With:
Hi Beige,

Thanks for contacting us. Please note that external links are not permitted to be shared via the messages and comments section as well as the broadcast message sent by the group moderator.

If there's anything else I can help you with, please let me know. Alternatively, I can also suggest visiting Goodreads Help, where you'll find answers to many commonly asked questions about the site.

Sincerely,
The Goodreads Team

 ~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ (abbaschild7748) | 23 comments @ Beige

That's crazy.. O.O

I know they've already said that external links was not to be shared any longer in group comments. You use to be able to put external links inside a coded-link name, like you can with GR links. But they changed that awhile ago. That's why external links to Amazon and YouTube or another book website was still able to be shared in posts, but just through a naked link, not a coded one to name it.

Perhaps this is what the GR rep meant in their reply to you? Since this change has already been implemented for a few years now? I hope that's what they meant anyway.. Cause if they do away with external links altogether in comment posts, then that would also mean that an Amazon naked link wouldn't be able to be shared either.

KarensKael | 8 comments People have mentioned Storygraph and Fable but if you're serious about reviewing, try LibraryThing. That site allows DMs. It doesn't have as many features as pre-enshittification GR, but it's a suggestion for those who still want to be able to review and use DMs.

Hmm, I wonder. Yes, its been a while since we have been able to use the "a href" html code for external links.

But I can't post either an ahref link or a "naked" copy & paste url on someone else's review comments at all. I wonder if that limitation is coming to groups?

Thanks Princess, I'm off to send another clarification request. Haha!

Thanks KarensKael.. I was thinking on this the last few months as well myself.. I've been a GR member since 2009 and have been moderating here since 2014.. I too, remember the good ol days of GR..

But full disclosure, people who have already gone to LibraryThing or are thinking on it, please be aware that ownership of LibraryThing is majority owned by founder Tim Spalding. Online bookseller AbeBooks bought a 40% share into LibraryThing in May 2006 for an undisclosed sum. AbeBooks became a subsidiary of Amazon in 2008.

So just making folks aware.

Goodreads used to be privately owned by the guy who created it but Amazon bought him out years ago.

Yeah I know.. Otis founded the site. It went live in early 2007. I joined in 2009.. Amazon bought it in 2013. About 3 yrs after that is when Amazon began their campaign to begin stripping this site of it's options and amenities. And here we are today. :(

Oh dear, I was unaware of that, thank you for letting me know. I'm just trying to figure a good site for reviews, Fable and Storygraph don't meet my needs in that aspect. it's good to discuss options.

message 638: by Karen (new)

Karen Denise Foster | 6 comments Well I am getting fed up with all of these changes. I can only see three or four books on my feed. I can't like or comment. I am not sure that I will continue on this and will be looking for somewhere else to go. I will definitely miss everyone. This used to be my "safe" and fun place.

message 639: by Beige (new)

Beige | 20 comments Another clarification. It sounds definitive to me. But I keep thinking that!!

It sounds like we'll have to get very creative if we want to share any kind of external URL, otherwise you won't be able to post a message in groups

I wrote:
Okay, we are getting much closer to 100% understanding. I shared your latest response with a few of my groups and this is the next question:

- Within our group messages/comments we currently aren't able to post an external link into the "a href" html code, but we can copy and paste a URL and it turns into a link, a link where you can see the address before you opt to press.

- With the upcoming change, will we no longer be able to copy and paste a URL and it turn into a link? Will we have to post URLs as plain text?

GR Support Responded:
Hi Beige,

If you are going to enter a URL, even in plain text, the system will still recognize this as an external link so you will not be able to add this.

Sincerely,
The Goodreads Team

message 640: by Théo d'Or (new)

Théo d'Or | 2 comments The lesson is clear - platforms that fail to invest in the social architectures that sustain them will eventually find themselves hollowed out, technically operational, but culturally emptied. And readers will migrate toward spaces that remember what GR has forgotten - that books are only half the story. The other half is Us. And the ace is in our hands. Not theirs. Because platforms don't own communities - people do. A platform is only as strong as the people who believe in it.

✦Nobody✦ ✧Hiatus⟅✧ ✦Hope to be back soon ✦ | 5 comments My thing they can't take away goodreads this is my only type of social media I joined when I was 13, 13!!! and now I'm 15! i've been on this website for years and I'd have a panic attack if it were gone! I love this website I have family on here! and friends (I need more but still) yeah there's bad people that's called looking through the account! and one Goodreads is awesome I love it! I can anything I want even express my best self I never was able to express and if we need to protest the fudge out of it then we will cause no one taking away my friends and family! no freaking way!.

People need to understand Goodreads is fun to a point but it's bad people trying to make sure this is taken away they need to care about us they are just making this website hated! and my thing is F U Goodreads needs to maybe idkkkkkkk add like a system where they can suspend a acc and stuff or ooo they could add stuff like(kinda like discord) tell you when your friend are online and stuff even more I feel like who ever made Goodreads can do better they just need a know how much we love Goodreads!!!

So this means then that the links to the petitions that have been created, will also no longer be available either.. Nor will Amazon's own site links will be able to be added either... Got it. Smh.

I suspect all previously external links will be okay? I have an external link image my profile and when they removed that ability, I had no problem editing and re-posting my profile with the link still there.

You're welcome :)

It is good to discuss options on where to jump if we have to. I just want you all to be aware if you're trying to avoid the hand of AmaNazi, be sure of where you're jumping to. Cause you could very well be in the same situation a few years down the road, if they own even part of that site. They could also always buy and take full ownership at any time.
