Two members of the group recently finished this, so I figured it's a good discussion to start with. If I were going to teach this book to a class, I'd also have them watch the Ken Burns documentary on Prohibition: http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/prohibition/

It was based on the book Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition by Daniel Okrent

Bill | 1 comments I would encourage those who want analysis to the great gatsby to watch the first few videos on this search: https://www.youtube.com/results?searc...

John Green knows what he is talking about in terms of literature, and has insightful analysis.

Wow! He is one fast talker! And he really packs in the meaning!

Funny, on my own review thread, one of my GR friends completely disagreed with my English teacher's interpretation that Gatsby represented the American dream. She said the phrase didn't exist at the time the book was written. But he was driven by aspiration, a self-made millionaire, even if he did it through illegal means.

This is awesome. Part of Studio 360's American Icon series: http://www.studio360.org/story/278359...
