The Author
William Murray is a Shropshire lad, for he
was born in that county in January 1921,
moving to Manchester at an early age. He was
educated at Manchester Grammar School
(North), and brought up in the northern
environment of business and commerce.
His hobbies were motor racing, gliding and
wireless communications. This latter interest
was fostered by a family friend who had been
a "Sparks" in the Merchant Service pre-1914.
Being partially trained and as shipboard life
had always appealed to him, he decided to go
to sea as a "Sparks" at the outbreak of war in
1939. His experiences during 1940/41 are the
subject of this book.
Later he was engaged in research and
experimental work, and sea trials for the Royal
Navy, eventually returning to the Merchant
Service. Recurrence of the effects of an old
injury resulted in his leaving the sea for good,
when he became lecturer and instructor at a
wireless college and Chief Flying Instructor
(gliding) at an R . A . F . station, training air
cadets.
After the war he developed and managed
brickmaking, haulage and sand and gravel producing
businesses, but in 1952 his business
career ended due to illness.
Married, he has a son and daughter.
