I saw the 2009 Roundabout Theater Broadway production of Godot. I went in with low expectations. It turned out to be excellent !

Earlier this fall, i noted that Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter (Ted & Bill's excellent adventure) are starring in the Becket play. I wouldn't have considered either Broadway material, but what do i know? lol

Fun list, Marie. And, best part, you liked each of them.

Unfortunately, not all my "Like" clicks worked & i got "error" messages after all but two. Please know that i felt each description of the books were good, regardless of that "like" error.

I particularly liked your comments on Shadow Manor. The idea of sharing the POV with those doing the haunting sounds effective.

Just the title of the Strand novel is jarring. Your Body Will Never Be Found?!? Yikes.

Thanks for sharing your titles and reviews here.

Thank you, Deb! :)

Well the "like" button is probably glitchy. But what do we expect with Glitchreads! lol Something seems to always be glitching on this website. lol

Shadow Manor was spooky. I have read that author before and really liked her books but she went down the haunted book trail this time and I just couldn't resist. :)

The Jeff Strand book was really extreme horror which I have read in the past but it has been a long time but the book had tons of tension and suspense too which kept me glued to my kindle. Jeff Strand is always fun with his books as he kind of mixes things up within his stories - I never know what to expect when I read something from him. lol Kind of like "potluck" as you never know what you are going to get! lol

You're welcome, madrano! I'm always happy to share my thoughts on books.

One common issue in some of the thrillers/mysteries I've read seems to be that they start out really great, but then just fall apart by the end. I don't know if it's because the authors didn't plan out their endings as well as their beginnings and middles or if it's just the books that I'm personally picking to read. Either way it really drags them down.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed my reviews, Alias!

I had absolutely no idea Amy Tan wrote a bird book! To go from Joy Luck Club to something like that is quite the leap and certainly not anything I would've expected. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

You're welcome, Hailey.

I read it back in 2024. Here is my review.

This is a journal by author Amy Tan of the birds that visit her yard. The daily journal writing is pretty straight forward. I think this would really appeal to people who are birders or even just have a simple bird feeder in their yard or on their deck. The entries are short a page or two. Her enthusiasm is clear and thoughtful. However, I was hoping for more story. That said, this didn't start out to be a book. Back in 2016 she was feeling depressed at the state of the world and racism. She took to journaling and drawing as a way out of her depression. I think drawing or journaling can be a wonderful way to help when life gets to be a bit too much. The journal can be just for you, so it doesn't matter if you don't have drawing skills. Also just being in nature or observing it is known to be beneficial to ones mental health. I did enjoy was Tan's drawings of all the birds she sees in her yard. She is quite talented. At the end of the book she includes a Selected Reading List of some of the birding books she has read

I rated it 3/5 Good.

I usually stick to the Ian Rutledge mysteries of Charles Todd, the Inspector Lynley mysteries of Elizabeth George, and the mysteries of Anne Perry. They don't seem to fall apart at the end. I've known some people who didn't like a particular offering in the series, but on the whole, the books seem to hold together.

Shadow Manor sounds terrific to me. Thank you for sharing. I like spooky, atmospheric mysteries.

Yes, it's as though some writers think an outstanding beginning will atone for the slow middle and ending. Nope. It only serves as contrast for me.

kajulie | 1 comments I read 5 books last month!

I finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot just as the month began. Then I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls for my AP Language and Composition class. After that, I started and finished Normal People by Sally Rooney in a day. Then I finally finished Dubliners by James Joyce. I finished off the month by reading Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I travelled for the last week of November and never got a chance to read. Great month!

madrano | 25384 comments Great selections, kajulie. The Skloot book was fascinating to me. And i enjoyed the fictional world Ishiguro presented in that novel.

Five books seems like a good month to me. Well done!

I really enjoyed The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. In fact, I read it twice. Once on my own and once with a book store group.

Thanks for sharing, kajulie.
