ABANDONED. Adult fantasy/sci-fi Assassin Discovers he is a Wizard

Howdy,
I first read this book in the mid '90s. The book was set in a fantasy world, but there was a sci-fi element introduced at the end. The only other thing that I remember about the setting was that if you went outside at night demons or similar would kill you. Only two types of people could survive outside at night, wizards and assassins.

The main character was raised as an assassin, then found out later in life that he was also a wizard. His love interest worked/lived in a travelling caravan that performed plays. His mother may have been a seamstress in the caravan, and may have had amnesia. The main quest item was some sort of fire gem that was actually a device for reaching some sort of sci-fi network.

The book was in a series, and I think it was the only fantasy-ish entry.
