Here's my own brief summary of the book:

Little did Andrew Macmillan know when he made his way to Cranford Grange, the estate of Sir Gerald Forsyth, to enlist the man's help in a big National Savings drive, that he would find himself embroiled in a domestic dispute and a murder. Now an accessory after the fact, he has to call on his friend, the lawyer Lee Hatten to save his skin.
