I read this book last month and finished it in two or three days. I loved the prose and found the story intriguing.

I really like how the narrative perspectives are woven together on the historical background but still didnt't intersect yet on the personal stories of the kids

I just finished the book and wasn't sure whether to give it 3 or 4 stars. I really liked it but something is missing. I'd pick it up again but not to frequently.

I liked Frederick a lot. I liked how close to reality the various endings were.
I wished for Werner and Marie and her father a better ending but that's not how war is.
The writing was great and I'm amazed what great job Doerr did by writing from a POV of a blind protagonist.
The ways the horrors of war are presented to the reader are subtle but at the same time leave a formating impression.

I wish more characters were introduced. Somehow I missed the futility and heaviness of war in the atmosphere. Maybe it's due to the main characters youth. Children are not really able to comprehend what happens and what their actions may lead to.

All in all it was an enjoyable read. It was worth the time!
