Synopsis
In the beginning a man comes to a small house in the woods maybe to check on his friends. Monsters of some type have killed them. A baby survived, (did she create a kind of shield around herself?), the man made a promise so he rescues the baby and takes her home.
The baby grows up in her guardians castle by the sea, in a tower. We meet her at about 18 ish. She has little interaction with her guardian of late. Every evening he walks up to her tower and stands at the other side of a small hatch where she must place a drop of her blood into a glass of water and put it in the space between doors where he takes it and drinks. (So he needs her blood to survive or for power? But refuses to take more than a drop)
She is and artist and paints on smooth pebbles that she takes to a dark corridor in a forgotten part of the castle and fixes to the wall there. Each stone together creates a huge mural. (I can’t remember what of it if she even realisss it).
She likes to grow plants on her balcony, she’s very attached to them.
She takes some kind of herb/root to aid sleep because she has nightmares maybe? But it is an addictive and dangerous plant to take.
At some point a prince? From another aisle comes to visit and arrangements are made by her guardian for her to marry this guy. I don’t think she’s happy about it and feels betrayed because her guardian needs the ships her betrothed will send, so she ends up agreeing for him.
On the voyage across the sea she spends the entire time in the crows nest. It reminds her of her tower and she is homesick.
At her new home she meets an old woman who is blind? And works a loom? (She turns out to be the princes mother whom he treats terribly for reasons from the past. (She will help her escape later).
The heroine and her guardian share some kind of curse or link that I can’t recall. It’s possible she has a vision of killing him and when it comes true it might be the cliffhanger but he doesn’t die though she stabs him in the heart.
I think I read this only last year or so. I can’t find it on my kindle and am so frustrated. I think it’s part of a series.
