Review:
This book is quite different from what I usually read. I am not typically drawn to biker or mafia settings, but I took a chance because I adore Eve Holmes and have loved the other two books in this series. I am glad I did, because while it is certainly not a feel-good book, it is still fantastically well-written.

The atmosphere is relentlessly bleak, and Alder’s role as VP of a biker gang is portrayed without any glamour. Cade’s depression and severe drinking problem are handled with honesty, and the story never pretends there is a quick or easy solution. Their relationship itself, however, always felt secure. From the moment Alder and Cade meet, they click in a way that leaves no real doubt about their ability to make it together, even when circumstances are at their worst. What kept me on edge was not the question of their connection but whether Cade would ever reach a place where he could experience anything resembling happiness. This book is brutal at times, yet it feels true to the reality of living with these struggles.

The writing is vivid, evocative, and beautifully paced. Eve Holmes is a very talented writer and I am thrilled that this series seems to be expanding into a larger project. Here's to hoping for many many more books to come!
