Riaan Schlebusch (riaans83) | 3 comments I’ve noticed that many Christian novels either preach too hard or avoid faith altogether. But the ones that hit me hardest are the ones where belief grows through experience, not exposition.

When you write or read Christian fiction, what makes faith feel authentic to you? The struggle? The unanswered prayers? The subtle moments of grace?

I’m curious how others handle that tension, especially in modern or prophetic settings.

~sarah~ | 33 comments I think making sure the point of opinion is gotten across, that this is what the character believes, and that is just a part of them, and not what should ALWAYS be a part of the reader of a Christian book ,as this seems quite pushy.
Maybe make it so that the characters religious views change throughout the novel, not always being fully faithful to God, as real religious people can do. (I don't mean any offence with this statement, I feel like this would sympathise with religious people however)
Maybe do a modern setting in this case (if you are)
I do not read Christian novels, but I think this would help avoid bias and make it feel more real.

again, I'm very sorry if I offend you, I don't mean to come across as ignorant or arrogant towards this genre; as I don't know the proper structure of religious novels

thanks for reading, I hope this helps

Allyson Borden | 15 comments Thats a hard question, but a good one!! I love to hear that you’re thinking about it in the first place! To be honest Christianity is a very hard thing to write about (or find to read) in my opinion, because in a way, it’s different for everybody. Everyone will have different opinions about it, and in different ways that they go about their faith so as long as you’re getting the scripture straight out of the Bible itself and not putting a twist on the Word, you should be good!! And yess!! Personally I believe some of the most compelling Christian stories is when they do struggle with their faith, and their journey with God. And Definitely with the unanswered prayers, that’s always a struggle for any Christian. And subtle moments of grace 100%!! All of those are extremely important for me and a Christian book!! But please remember that no matter which way you do it they’re will always be people that like and don’t like it..
idk if this is really helpful, but that’s just my personal take on the subject!
Good luck!!!!

Allyson Borden | 15 comments Also, if you’re trying to make it seem less preachy, instead of making the book seem like an obvious lesson, make it more about the character (s) feelings with/on struggles, personal opinions on Christianity, faith, grace, forgiveness, etc.
