Description: Increasingly, a plea is being made for "new fathers." Fathers are willing to do much for the sake of their children: in that respect, they are similar to mothers. More and more fathers are participating more and more intensively in the care and upbringing of their children.
The practical side usually presents no problems: changing a diaper is quickly learned, applying a bandage is quickly done.
The greater role fathers play in the care and upbringing evokes emotions in them ranging from concern, tenderness, pride, and love to surprise, helplessness, despair, hatred, and anger.
New fathers have no role models to follow, receive little recognition from their peers, and are completely alone with their conflicting feelings. After all, fathers are also men who keep their emotions under control as much as possible.
Jos Kemperman believes that this has to stop. Using numerous examples, he explores all the emotions he experiences as a father. Honest and unforgiving—even towards himself—but above all, it puts things into perspective and is humorous. Many new fathers will find comfort and strength in this book.
Jos Kemperman, a father of three, is a social worker at the Child Protection Council in Arnhem. For years, he wrote a column in Ouders van Nu, a column highly respected by mothers, too.
