Yeah absolutely, I really hope this helps!! Stay strong and fight those urges <3

I've always wanted to try it, but I just don't know how to. I don't know how to just cut myself without being scared.

Don't. Don't get started. I promise you it's not worth it.

I wanted to try the butterfly thing but I’m scared that my parents will see it and they get mad if they found out I saw any mentions of sh online… and like that’s the only way to find out this exists so they’d know… I could draw one somewhere no one will see but like it’s not healed fully there yet…

I was going to suggest drawing it somewhere under clothes until I saw the last line... if you do it somewhere visible, maybe you could draw other things around it so your family might think it was just a doodle?

I used to try when I was 8, thankfully I didn’t know you use a razor (I was using kid scissors) to do it so it never worked, but if I could go back and tell younger me this I would. She would never wanna harm a butterfly.

That's still SH if you were trying to hurt yourself, but I get that. I'm glad you don't do it anymore 🫂
The Butterfly Project is a self-injury awareness movement aimed at giving people who struggle with self-harm a healthy coping mechanism and motivation to heal and recover.
How Can I Participate?
If you yourself struggle with self-harm, here's how you can participate in The Butterfly Project.
- Whenever you have the urge to self-harm, draw a butterfly on the place you want to hurt with a skin-safe marker (any color you choose)
- Name the butterfly after someone important in your life.
- Let the butterfly fade naturally.
- The goal is to keep the butterfly "alive" and if you self-harm before it fades, it "dies".
- If your butterfly dies, that's okay. Gently scrub it off and draw it again. Keep going.
- A loved one can draw a butterfly on you - these are extra-special, so try your best not to "kill" it.
- Keep track of your "Butterfly Streak" (how long you've kept the butterfly alive) and use it as motivation to try to heal.
If you do not struggle with self-harm, but a friend or loved one does, you can draw a butterfly on your body to show support.
