THE CROWNE discussion

From motherly love
To motherly grief
Joseph must also know the effects
Of a loss truly undeserved
It should've been entirely me
He was only 11 years
A child who didn't reach adulthood
I'll revive you, I will find you living
In an end, tragedy cries
"Magos turned around ready"
Fingers tracing an invisible body
At times when breathing is the only meaning
When all one can experience is despair
From more to losing Santiago
Addiction to what could've been alive
"The audience wept along with Magos"
(⤴️ "" means quote from the book)

The fragility of Monstrilio is something that should be highly valued. It tackles so many deep topics and while most of them dark, still has some light to the end of the tunnel. It is a one of a kind book in the literary landscape of dark and depressing reads. The themes of the books are as follows
First theme is about motherly love and grief. At the core and at the center of this novel is a mother. A mother that would risk everything for her son and would do everything to love and care for him. The unending love and familial connection is what drives Magos to do her actions of devastation that crosses typical ethical boundaries. Fatherly grief can also be applied here as Joseph is a someone who has deep connection as a biological father. Horror and thrill is what unveiled to them as Magos’s creation unfolded. Love can persist after death, and Magos would need to be the one to prove that right. With supernatural elements and a bizarre monster, who knows if Santiago’s true nature and love for his parents can be reciprocated which leads us to the second theme.
If someone like Santiago can even have an identity, is he even human? What “human” qualities does he encompasses? Does this life after death only alter the physical aspect of his character or changers/removes a major part of what makes human beings more unique than other species. The identity of Santiago is a common theme that is explored through his monstrous and uncommon form. Another thing is also said when his form day by day turns into something that resembles an actual human being. As Santiago/Monstrilio gets older, his features becomes more human and his physical appearance resemble a human being more. This comes to a point where Monstrilio cae now actually disguise himself as a human being. Pretending to be “human” and socializing in a world where his authentic self is not primarily something natural. Monstrilio, even though he came from a living being, is considered a monster by the people that nurtured him, it is only one his parents got used to his nature that the inevitably cared back to him. It's a sad reality for people who can also experience and relate to him as someone deemed an outcast in society and someone that doesn’t fit in to what is normal. His odd creation to this world and sometimes his weird animalistic instincts is a part of him that he can't erase and must handle these all by himself as he can't find anyone to relate to his intuitions and problems. There’s a fine line between monstrosity and humanity and this book tackles these topics through Santiago’s eyes which is a great discussion to what essentially makes someone’ s “humanity” authentic and real.
The last theme that I found in here is—Love. Love in itself is a core part of this book, from family love romantic love and platonic love. The relationships between Monstrilio and the humans that he interacts with is an example of how different niche relationship dynamics are formed and created when our differences are embodied through not only our physical appearance but also in our mental and emotional capacity. It’s not only Monstrilio being the one who needs love but also the people around him, and he slowly but surely learns t reciprocate all of it back with the norms and standards put into human relationships. It’s a fascinating deep dive into nurturing an entire separate identity bonded by love through all what could result in your actions. Magos’s actions let to Monstrilio being born or put into this world and for her, it felt like she becomes a parent once again, that hope and light that she needs are present and now unveiled in what she has created just from the lump of 11-year-old Santiago’s last dying breath.
