Khadijah | 57 comments No. At NVHS we have those but it really doesn't do any good. I'm a Muslim and bisexual.

I would like to have an Intersectionality club. An intersectionality club is essential because it provides a space for students to understand how their overlapping social identities, such as race, gender, class, and ability, create unique life experiences. It validates students who hold multiple marginalized identities, ensuring they feel seen and understood in their entirety. This type of club moves beyond single-issue discussions, teaching students that systems of oppression like racism and sexism are often interconnected. By fostering these complex conversations, it cultivates a deeper sense of empathy and awareness among the student body. The club empowers students to become effective allies by learning about challenges outside their own direct experience. It also provides a brave space for students to discuss sensitive topics and support one another without fear of judgment. An intersectionality club encourages critical thinking, helping students analyze how power and privilege function within their school and in society. It equips young people with the vocabulary and framework to advocate for more inclusive policies and practices. This sense of community can significantly reduce feelings of isolation for students navigating complex identities. Ultimately, such a club prepares students for a diverse world by teaching them to appreciate complexity, champion equity, and engage with others respectfully.

Khadijah | 57 comments Marginalization refers to being pushed to the edges of society and having less systemic power, which often applies to groups outside the historical majority. While your examples of race, religion, and sexual orientation are common, marginalization also includes disability, neurodivergence, and socioeconomic status. The concept is intersectional, meaning a person can have some identities that are part of a dominant group and others that are marginalized. Therefore, while your race and religion are part of the societal majority, being asexual and AuDHD are indeed considered marginalized identities.
