Michael Toleno (michael_toleno) | 67 comments Many of the editions of this book say that it was "first published" January 1, 1976. Note this site (and others): https://books.google.com/books/about/...
The book was first published in 1874. Perhaps there was a major new edition published in 1976, but the typical practice in Goodreads is to use the original publication date of the material, even if prefaces, analyses, and so forth are added in later editions. For example, on my statistics graph, The Iliad was published in "–800" and The Odyssey in "–700," meaning, of course, 800 B.C. and 700 B.C., even though the versions that I actually read were published in the 21st century and contained comments, forwards, essays, and so forth that were written in modern times.

I think that this edition https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7... is linked in the "This topic is about" field, but I can't be certain. It is an example of an incorrect "first published" date of 1976.
