I just finished this one and the only thing I can think of is:

It's the Japanese version of "The Remains of the Day".

It was just way too similar.

Oh no! Only one book has made me bawl like a baby in the past couple of years, and that book was the The Remains of the Day. I'll put a note on my list to get a box of tissue ready when I read this one. Thanks for the heads up!
