Change in series tone

I'm interested in hearing any thoughts about how you feel when a book feels out of step with the rest of the series.

Some background - my Mafia series is dark romance but emphasis more on plot than pitch black content. However I'm currently writing book 7 and finding that the plot is driving a much more graphic dark torture vibe than the rest of the books in the series.

Do you embrace a change in tone mid series or does it annoy you when you're halfway through a series and the vibe changes?

I personally embrace it especially when it is justified. As long as the characters are staying the same and not doing a total personality shift, it is welcomed.

I think if it’s turning more graphic/torture because of revenge (or similar), most people would get behind it! But I’m also very de-sensitized 😂
