Maddie | 1 comments I have my bachelor’s degree in English and recently finished an editorial internship at a small press. I'm aiming to someday be a full-fledged editor.

My area of expertise is speculative fiction—an umbrella that includes fantasy, science fiction, horror, magical realism, and all things fantastical.

Other areas of interest/knowledge:

Sapphic/Lesbian Fiction (of any spice level)

YA

Video Game/Visual Novel Scripts

I have a solid handle on the tropes of romance and romantasy. I'm happy to beta low spice m/f and m/m stories, but if what you have is high spice or erotica, I am not a good fit for you. I'm not your target audience, and there are things your reader might love that will simply baffle me.

I can help with plot holes, word choice, pacing, flow, dialogue, and characterization/character development. My beta reading tends to be more extensive than most, and can border on developmental editing advice. You’ll receive line notes, as well as a beta report.

A warning; I can be a little blunt, but never mean. I don’t sugarcoat critique or sandwich it between compliments to make it easier to swallow—but I’m not going to torch your work with a flamethrower either. I also make sure to give praise where praise is due!

I’ve seen concerns about paid beta readers not actually reading the work and instead running it through AI. I share those fears about AI’s impact on both human creativity and the job market for writers and editors. I promise I won’t feed your work to the demon.

My current rate is 0.0015 cents per word, or $1.50 per thousand words - I've just raised it. I keep getting told by clients that my work is more detailed and useful than what they usually get, and that I should be charging more, and I've finally given in.

Much of my previous work has been done on reddit. You can find several testimonials there:

Some highlights:

" She is funny. She is professional. And she is very clear in her communication. She asked me what my points of attention were prior to starting the read, and addressed all those points in her feedback giving me so much to work with in my revision. She also kept me up to date throughout the whole process and delivered on time, which is something I appreciated.

I personally love the type of feedback she gave, which was a mixture of line notes (very detailed as well, with reasonings and suggestions) and a thorough report at the end. Honestly, I don’t think you’ll get much better than that for beta reading, and especially at that price."

"This is the feedback you want before you publish and someone makes those points in a two star review."

"I tend to use a lot of beta readers, and u/paidbetareading is by far the most in-depth beta reader I've hired."

" I found the feedback fair and direct (definitely a plus for me! I cannot improve as a writer if I'm left wondering what someone means or if things are sugarcoated!), and the praise always felt earned when given, because it never felt like it was meant just as a pat on the back. Overall, I was very happy with her services and I'm whole-heartedly vouching for her. She might've single-handedly saved me from making everyone hate one of my MCs, hah."

In summary; everyone loves me, please give me money and your manuscript now.
