Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1472 comments I wrote down two notes for sure but also will jump in with you. I really loved this one.

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1472 comments - 23% and I really like this authors writing style. Feel very dropped in the middle of it, but I think the reveals are done well. The camps is scary, sad, and a little too relevant with everything going on today. Loved the little murderbot nod

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1472 comments - 42%. I thought the lines about history always repeating and having a short memory as a species was interesting especially after learning Ray’s story (and even more after Finch's story later which is horrific) I think this is supposed to be in the far future where things at some point were great for LGBT people but it has swung back around in the worst way. (I thought a long time but MJ started writing it right after the election and it's supposed to set about 10 years in the future)

Kirsten | 1235 comments I think the writing is a little clunky and the SF is a little dull... This feels a bit YA to me, in terms of the telling rather than showing.

Also, oy, it's depressing. I always wonder why authors choose to write so much queer pain, especially set in the future (not that this isn't real in some places and possible everywhere).

I think I like Murderbot better than this, though the parallels are fun. I also like the way they are starting to open up (I'm about 40% in). I am not at all sure how this story will resolve--romance or the science?

Kirsten | 1235 comments Oh… I forgot it was a trilogy. It’s not going to resolve. I’m both relieved the story has room to grow and disappointed at the lack of resolution.

Kirsten | 1235 comments Okay, the end is pretty exciting.

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1472 comments I had also forgot it was a trilogy and was disappointed by the lack of resolution, but hoping it leads to a little bigger action. In both sure it’s ever going to be a romance though.

Very depressing, I know the author is nonbinary so I think it’s definitely them working through things. I thought the end felt a little more hopeful so hoping it eventually gets happier.

Kirsten | 1235 comments Yes, I was very glad about the rescue by Thompson (and learning he wanted to come back) and the beginning of more connections for both of them eventually. And Ray standing up to the Commander. I want Finch to get back pay!
