Description:
How Do ‘Unsung Heroes’ Survive Life in the Desert?

Environmental Survivors Turn Up the Heat in Classic Children’s Tale

Some call them pests. Others term them Unsung Heroes. This new book’s illustrations depict just a few of the hardy creatures that call the Sonoran Desert home.

Tucked away deep in the harsh surroundings of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, there thrives a multitude of curious critters. Meet Remy the cockroach, Penny the packrat, Duane the dung beetle, and Timmy the termite, as they all work together to survive the harsh climate of America’s great Southwestern desert.

In this delightfully illustrated book for young readers, the four desert critters show their importance within the area’s ecology, as this informative story praises these unsung heroes of the Southwest.

The Sonoran landscape covers the southern half of Arizona, southeastern California, and much of Sonora and Baja California in Mexico.

“Once upon a time, in the vast expanse of a sun-scorched desert, life thrived in subtle interwoven harmony. Beneath the blistering sun and shifting sands, a small creature played a vital role in maintaining this delicate balance.”

That small creature was a dung beetle, which collected animal droppings to bury along the desert floor, which in turn fertilized the dry earth to enable vegetation to grow. This story inspired the young boy hearing it to learn that each and every creature has its purpose, and “to protect and respect all life, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.”

About the Author:
R. L. Garr loves to write and create. She owned and operated a pest control company and landscaping company in Arizona, where she lives with her spouse and two dogs. Owning the pest control company inspired her to write this book. She wants to educate readers on “the importance of all the desert critters, not to eradicate them, but understand them.”

“Cockroaches are not often heroes in books, but in this children’s ecological tale about desert survival, Remy the cockroach is a leader among bugs. ¡Viva la cucaracha! – Lynn Eddy, VP of Acquisitions, Strategic Book Publishing
