Hazel | 3 comments I took the baton: Jenny put the idea out there.

The whopper is the assumption we are allowed to make about Sam. Because it is not made clear (yeah, I know, the clues are there) but it wasn't until Harry mentioned the person of all of our attention being in the embassy that I questioned my assumption.

Also, I the same card is played in book-two: the ministry man is not all he seems to be.

Kori | 5 comments We were led up a path very early on: Rebecca dumps her thoughts about 'Daddy' on the way to work and her views are then underlined (the Christmas card) and of course she is shocked when she learns of the truth behind her uncle and aunt's trip away.

All of the above is 20-20 hindsight: I fell for it all.

I've not read that many books of this genre and do wonder if the author treads new ground by feeding the lines that 'allow' us to make the assumptions. Personally, I think it's great. Even though I was unaware at the time, I so much enjoy how we are teased, tempted and kept from the history behind why the characters are where they are: the discussions that have been generated from the story are fantastic.

Maya | 6 comments I think that is probably more of why I felt niggled by the story; he, the author, is giving us the rope and I hung myself with it. I never saw any of that Kori. Daddy was in the firing line from the start.

I'm going to read this again; too much, I think, sailed on by without me noticing.

Mary | 10 comments Join the club, Maya. I think most of us have read it more than once.

Naomi | 4 comments 'I think most of us have read it more than once' - yep!

Tina | 4 comments I will. Most of what you've been chatting about sailed over my head.

Ellie | 8 comments '...giving us the rope...' I was left dangling after the phone call. The feeling of being deflated was tangible. It took a while, but I think it would have come across as a little more than preposterous if Rebecca had...

Emily | 12 comments 'Daddy was in the firing line from the start.' I missed the importance of the Christmas card and so I was anti-dad right up until...
