🕵️ Q&A: What Did You Just Sign Up For?

This is the place for all your questions—whether you're wondering how the box works, whether your audiobook counts, or if it's normal for the locks to hum at night. (It is. Probably.)

Ask anything. Answers may be helpful. Or unsettling. Hopefully both.

Q: Do my partner and I have to read the same book?
A: Nope! You each choose your own book each week. The shared part is the prompt and reflection.

Q: What happens if we try to open the box early?
A: We don’t recommend it. The last team that tried hasn’t been seen since Week 6.

Q: How long does the book have to be?
A: Standard challenge rules apply—at least 100 pages unless otherwise stated in a prompt.

Q: Can I bribe the box?
A: You can try. It mostly likes snacks, old secrets, and poetry written at 3am.

Q: What if one of us forgets to post our reflection?
A: The keyhole stays locked. You can still read and respond later, but you won’t get that week’s message.

Q: My keyhole is glowing faintly. Is that normal?
A: Completely. You probably just said something meaningful.

Q: Can I read ahead?
A: You can, but don’t post ahead. The box only opens in real time. Also: the read date matters—not the start date.

Q: Can we switch partners partway through?
A: Only in rare cases. This is a 13-week partnership challenge, so try to stick it out. If something urgent comes up, contact the mods.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 966 comments Question 1: By posting reflections, I assume that just means what we though of our book.

Question 2: We don't have to read the same book, but may we? My partner and I do a lot of buddy reads together so it helps us get extra points.

Question 3: We get new prompts on Sundays 6:00 PM CT so does that mean as long as we post a reflection before that time we're fine to get our message?

Q1: You will get a prompt and the boom has to match that prompt. Once that is checked in, you will get a reflection, an additional question to answer that is intended to spark conversation.

Q2: Of course you can read the same book, as long as you can both get it to fit the prompt.

Q3: As long as you post your completion by then you get the next prompt. Depending on timing, you may get the reflection and the next prompt at the same time.

Julia | 64 comments Hi Lisa, I don't fully understand the discussion prompt for week 2: "What do you think your partner would have expected from your cover—and were they right?" Who is meant by "YOUR cover" and "were they right" - about what?
Can you rephrase this with partner A and B instead? Is the prompt:
1) What would I have expected from my partner's cover? And is my partner then supposed to tell me whether my guess would've been correct?
2) Did my own book meet the expectations that I had for it?
3) Do I think my partner's expectations in her book were met? And my partner then tells me whether my guess was correct?

Week 2 Clarification
When the prompt says: “What do you think your partner would have expected from your cover—and were they right?” here’s how it works with Partner A and B:

Partner B looks at Partner A’s cover and says:
“If I had only the cover to go on, I would’ve expected your book to be about X.”

Partner A then responds:
“Yep, that matches what the book delivered” OR “Nope, the cover was misleading—here’s how.”

Then switch roles: Partner A guesses from Partner B’s cover, and Partner B responds.

So the flow is: one partner guesses what the other’s book looked like it would be about, and the book’s owner confirms or denies whether that expectation matched reality.

Kat (bookworm2017) | 1511 comments Can you read a certain % of a book and dnf and still get the message? I’ve read 50% of my book and I’m bored.

I would say if you've read at least 100 Pages you can count it and DNF.
