The third book in The Expanse series takes us back to the alien gate, along with all the warring factions of humanity with their space navies.
Along for the ride are a large number of civilians, including a sabateur masquerading as a technician, an odd assembly of artists and clergy, there to witness the gate first-hand. And of course James Holden and his crew on the Rocinante, along with a media crew creating a documentary.
We quickly learn that everyone is being manipulated by the forces controlling the gate, but it's not clear why, or what those forces want - if anything.
Tension is very high, and when things go wrong the fragile peace is destroyed and everyone is at each other's throats. Mutiny, betrayal, cowardice and courage, old rivalries and new allies. The action is intense.
