It all fits in place, the long white hair, brilliant blue eyes, flushed, freckle spotted cheeks, short demeanor, it is her.
“And you don’t remember me,” I mutter, yet Dove takes no notice. Her eyes flutter closed, and then suddenly she’s squeezing them shut and on her hands and knees trying to barf up something that isn’t there. Well that’s a sad thought, I suppose she hasn’t eaten properly since the Force about a decade ago. I stand and quietly walk over, crouching and softly rubbing her back in a soothing circular motion. After a few minutes she sits back and starts crying silently, rolling into a little ball.
“Hey,” I whisper. “Do you have any family? I’ll let you go for free if…” I hesitate, not sure where I was trying to go with this. At this, Dove just cries harder, her cracked voice like a child’s after a tantrum. “All… dead… Mother left… for Hunter…” She whimpers in between gulps and sobs. Her cheeks redden, either for embarrassment for crying in front of the prince, or out of a deeper sadness… no it’s something else. I place my calloused hand on her forehead, surprised by the sudden heat that wasn’t there only moments ago.
“Sleep,” I urge out of the blue. She nods, still hiccuping, and then she lays on the cold stone ground. The moment her head touches the rocky floor, she’s out. “The poison isn’t out of her system yet,” I realize with a breath, biting my knuckle. I pick her up with one fell swoop and I run, run, to the castle.

Once on the palace grounds, I’m sprinting. All guards and Hunters part once they see me coming, no one daring to challenge me. Dove can’t be any heavier than seventy pounds judging by her size and frame. I dash in through the hallways, knowing the maze like I know my own name. One of the healers, Annie, is idling in against the wall, fingers toying with her frizzy hair. I yell for her and soon enough, she’s running at my side, watching Dove with curiosity.
We narrowly avoided the Council, walking out from their meeting, chittering away like otters. My black cloak billows out behind me, like an extended shadow. I veer away from the infirmary, and we make it to my chambers.
The bed is made and when I lay Dove down, I wince, knowing my maid won’t like that I’ve wrinkled it and it’s only just past noon. Annie takes out her medicines and starts feeding them to Dove. I smirk slightly as her pants slide just slightly down her hips. But Annie strips them off entirely, checking the wound and muttering incoherently at the scar that had so fragilely knitted back together, courtesy of me. Annie nods at me and leaves the room, knowing she had done her job. I took a cloth from the bathroom and wet it, walking back over to Dove only to find that she had woken up. She’s looking at her hands, as if in a trance, till I smack her shoulder with the wet cloth. Her wide eyes flick up to me and she pulls off a crooked grin, then she begins to laugh, giggles bubbling out like a child.
“You just couldn’t keep your pants on could you, darling-?” I barely have time to finish my snarky comment before she kisses me. I’m frozen with shock, not daring to breathe. Her arms are thrown loosely around my neck, fingers intertwining in my hair. I pull away, nearly shoving her all the way across the bed. She stays laying on the bed, looking wistfully at the ceiling with an awestruck look plastered on her face.
“What the hell was that?” I demand.
“A kiss,” she replies simply, now chuckling again.
“Go back to bed,” I groan, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand, right where her lips touched mine.

Rowan | 97 comments I think you’re fine, my chapters aren’t very long either.
Also, I once read a chapter that was only a sentence long.

claire! [circe’s version {long live polites!}] | 490 comments same, but sometimes it’s like that for dramatic affect i guess
