Description: AVKOM er det fjerde og siste bindet av Amalie Skrams store romansyklus HELLEMYRSFOLKET (1889-1898). Dette romanverket ble planlagt bakfra. Amalie Skram har fortalt at utgangspunktet var en sann historie om en fattig student som skjøt seg selv etter å ha stjålet penger. For å komme til bunns i problemet om "hvordan det gikk til at noen ble tyver og lovovertredere" måtte hun gå tilbake til fortiden, til oldefarens historie, til Sjur Gabriels liv i Hellemyren.
I avkom er vi kommet til utgangspunktet, til fortellingen om Severin, Siverts sønn, som velger en mørk avslutning på sitt eget liv. Det er et rikt persongalleri som tegnes opp, med Bergen og til slutt Kristiania som bakteppe. Severins søster Fie har en sentral plass, og får en helt annen skjebne enn broren. Felles for de to søsknene er at livet deres domineres av en ufattelig kjærlighetsløs mor. Den rike og lykkelige konsulfamilien Smith danner en skarp kontrast til Myre-familien. Likevel er de to familienes liv vevet sammen på avgjørende områder.
