I just finished "James by Percival Everett." A take on Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." It chronicles the perilous journey of a runaway slave, highlighting his intelligence, literacy, and resourcefulness. A powerful narrative that skillfully addresses race, power, and survival in 19th-century America.

Tying into this, I recently had the opportunity to interview the great-great-grandson of Robert Smalls, the slave who commandeered a Confederate ship to freedom. His story is chronicled in a graphic novel soon to be produced as a motion picture.
