Zijn andere dochters, Goneril en Regan, verraden hem en drijven hem tot waanzin. Intussen wordt de edelman Gloucester misleid door zijn oneerlijke zoon. Uiteindelijk leidt het verhaal tot verraad, verlies en tragische inzichten.
